[4 YEARS LATER]
"BOSS IT'S ME," A VOICE called out from outside my office. I didn't remove my eyes from the screen of my computer, and I honestly didn't want to be interrupted, but I sighed and answered anyway, "Come in."
The door opens, and an employee enters the room with a nervous look on his face. He was a new writer in the company and has only been working here for six months. He still makes mistakes at times, so the team would usually complain, but I see potential in him, especially since he works hard. I appreciate those kinds of people the most.
"Sorry to disturb you Mr. McCartney, but I just finished the revisions you wanted me to do. I was hoping to get it checked," he says as he hands me the document.
I quickly skimmed through the document and nodded my head in approval. "It's better than the last one you sent," I said, and a smile instantly appears on his face.
"But don't be too happy just yet. This was your fourth revision just on a single part. Be more excited if you no longer have to make constant changes in your work, is that understood?" I then tell him, and the smile on his face immediately disappears.
"I understand Mr. McCartney, thank you for the feedback," he then says as I hand him the document back.
"Alright, your shift already ended. You should go home. Don't waste too much of your time in the office, especially since you've already been here all day," I say right after, and the smile on his face immediately returned.
Was I like this too when I was new? Why does everyone have to smile so much?
"Thank you again, Mr. McCartney." The new employee bows his head to me and finally heads out. As soon as he was gone, I took a deep breath and massaged my temple. "Congratulations Mr. McCartney, you just had another boring day."
By the way, my name is Dane Andrew McCartney, but my very few friends call me Day. I'm a 30-year-old editor-in-chief who's also a Department Head of the Magazine Division in EXRay Media, a magazine that shows exclusive insights into the lives of famous and well-known people.
While I work for a magazine that talks about other people's exciting lives, I suffer the complete opposite.
I've always been a workaholic, but for a while, my job wasn't the only thing that took up a large space in my ever-so-boring life. I met a breathtaking human who showed the best of me, and I experienced things that I never thought I'd ever experience; I even have the scars to prove it. But those days are long gone, and all I could think about now is how I'll spend my life alone with my dog, who is apparently 12 years old.
Neilson explained to me that the puppy my uncle first adopted twenty years ago had actually died, and he was actually a she. The dog I have now is her son, and he was the one who got the name Hunter, the very name I suggested to my uncle. I heard he was born the same year my uncle died, so that fact made me feel more attached to Hunter even more.
"Day," someone calls out, interrupting me with my thoughts.
I haven't even answered them yet, but then the door opens, revealing Jane who had just cut her hair short, making her look like Angelina Jolie in her 1995 film, Hackers. Surprisingly enough, she looked good. I guess having a kid made her bloom for some reason.
"Good evening mister editor-in-chief," she greeted me.
"Good evening team leader," I greeted her back, and Jane rolled her eyes in annoyance since it's the name she would usually say to me in the past.
