"IS THE CHAIRMAN OKAY?" I asked as I was walking down the corridor with Mr. Jonathan Philips. He called me an hour ago and told me to find him in this hotel. I don't exactly know why he wanted to see me, but by the looks of it, things regarding the chairman have been rough. I'd be glad if I'm able to help in any way.
"He's trying to be okay, thankfully the judge decided to put him on house arrest while we're still working on his case," Mr. Philips answers.
We then stopped in front of a door, and then he gestures for me to head inside. I didn't really say anything, but then I took a deep breath and knocked on the door. "Chairman, it's me," I say.
I could hear footsteps inside the room, and then the door suddenly swung open, revealing the Companions Association's m
Finally, I heard footsteps, and then the door swung open, revealing the Companions Association's most prized possession, Chairman Hunter. He looked exhausted, and his eyes were red, almost like he's been crying all day, which was a sight I wasn't entirely used to.
"Come in," he coldly says as he walks back inside, leaving the door open for me. I gulped and took a deep breath before going in the room and closing the door.
"Sit," he commands as he walked towards the large window that showed the city lights. I looked around and noticed that there weren't any chairs, so I decided to sit on the edge of the bed instead.
"I'm glad you're still loyal to me Mr. Holland," the chairman says without looking at me.
"You've treated us like family and you've taught us everything we know now. There are still a lot of us who are loyal to you, and we are willing to serve you till the end, especially when this Association...is the only thing that's left for us," I sincerely tell him.
"I'm glad", he simply says before making the whole room awkward and quiet again.
After the Association was exposed, practically everyone who worked there was arrested, especially the big dogs. But luckily for us—the companions—we were considered as victims, so we were automatically pardoned...except for the chairman here. He was a companion for more than a decade, but like the big dogs planned everything out if ever a situation like this would happen, they made him the chairman, making him somehow guilty as well.
But by the looks of it, Mr. Philips and Mr. White are doing everything they can to help him.
"I called you here because I want you to do something for me," the chairman finally says.
"W-What is it sir?" I nervously asked.
"It's a very important task, can you do it?" he asked next, but before I could even answer, he takes something from the drawers, then he walks towards me and hands it over.
"A photo?" I whispered to myself. I looked at the photo and saw a man with platinum white hair and blue eyes. I instantly knew who he was. He was all over the news, and master Hael used to talk about him all the time.
"His name is Dane Andrew McCartney. He was supposed to be the heir to Companion's Association, but apparently there was never a Will & Testament so that man wasn't able to inherit any of Hael's riches and properties," the chairman explains to me. He then went back to standing in front of the window before continuing, "Look at that photo carefully...because that is the man you will be protecting with all your life while I'm away."
"What?" I asked in shock.
"I'm not actually capable of protecting him now because of my current situation, so if it means you have to die just so you could protect him...then die...that is the only thing you can do for me, do you understand?" the chairman asked, making me shiver for some reason.
I gulped and quickly stood up from the bed. "I understand chairman," I answered with no hint of hesitation. I can do anything for chairman Hunter, but this is master Hael's nephew too. Master Hael took us in when no one else did. I will forever be in his debt.
"Good," he says as he finally faces me.
"That man is my everything. I have given everything I have for his sake," the chairman then stated, slowly walking towards me. "I have killed so many for his sake, and I will do it all over again if I have to. So if you ever try to betray me; if you ever try to even touch my everything...I won't hesitate to kill you too, and I don't care if I have to rot in prison for it, do you understand?" the chairman asked, his question making me gulp in terror.
My whole body stiffened as I answered, "Y-Yes...chairman...I understand"
"There's a brown envelope on the bed. The address and the key to the place where you'll be staying can be found inside. You will continue watching over him until my case is cleared. And if I ever get back, and if you have fulfilled your duties properly, I will grant you a better place to stay, and a generous amount of money so you could start over," the chairman explains, making me widen my eyes from shock.
"I will definitely do my best sir. I will protect and watch over Mr. Dane Andrew McCartney with all my life."
The chairman doesn't say anything else, but his eyes were teary again. I thought he was going to give me another warning, but then he gently pats my back and says, "Thank you, Ben."
I don't know why, but this strong man—the most intimidating man in the Companions, suddenly looked pitiful.
"You are always welcome sir," I say, and I took the envelope on the bed and looked back at him, "Then I'll be off." I was about to leave the room when the chairman suddenly called out for me one last time.
"Never mention me, and never tell him or make him even think that you're somehow connected to me, okay?"
I smiled and nodded my head, "Okay"
I grabbed the doorknob and heard the chairman continue. "One last thing..." he starts. "The Companion's Association is always watching Holland."
I gave a nervous smile and replied to him, "I know sir...I definitely know."
I closed the door and walked my way to my temporary home.
And I've been Day's neighbor ever since.
