Rue and Jules were eating lunch together, and everything was fine. Or, at least it was until Rue suddenly went completely still.
"Rue?" Jules asked patiently. "You okay?"
Rue looked up at her, eerily quiet. She was shaking, and the expression on her face was one of confusion and distress. If Jules hadn't known her as well as she did, she might not have noticed anything was off, but she knew the signs. It's not like this was the first one of Rue's panic attacks she'd bore witness to, and she had seen all the different flavors of it. This one was masked well, but the message sent loud and clear.
"Do you wanna go to the bathroom?" the blonde asked, getting a frantic nod in response. She calmly took Rue's hands and led the both of them to the bathroom, shutting them in a stall together. It wasn't uncommon for them to find each other in this position, whether it be because Rue was having a mental health issue or Jules getting overstimulated. "Look, it's just us"
"Jules, I-" Rue cut herself off with a cough, making the girl across from her frown.
"Can I hug you?" Jules asked her, contemplating how to help her friend. "Would that help?"
"Just, can you just..." Rue swallowed, holding up her hands in a silent request. "Jules"
"Okay, okay" Jules soothed, taking the brunette's hands in her own and holding onto them firmly, taking a deep breath. Rue mimicked the breathing a few times, slowing down bit by bit with every repetition. "There you go" Jules said gently. "You're okay"
"Fuck, I'm sorry"
"No, none of that" Jules dismissed the apology. "You're doing so well" she praised. She knew these things had gotten harder for the addict since she started going sober. Before, if Rue got anxious, she could just pop a few more pills until her brain slowed down and everything was hazy. Now, though? She had to endure those feelings head-on. "I'm so proud of you, Rue"
"I'm um..." Rue swallowed thickly, flinching slightly as the bell for class rang. "Can we stay here for the period?"
"Of course"
