Aria was sure she knew what to ask, but those questions flew out of her mind the moment Tope gestured for her to go into Kachi's office. The woman shut the door behind her, leaving Aria alone with the man who always made her speechless. Kachi took his time looking up at her. He spent a few seconds staring at his screen before he slowly lifted his gaze.He looked exactly the same as the last time she saw him; short hair, neatly trimmed beard and that intense stare. Her stomach tightened and her head emptied. When he opened his mouth to speak, her knees weakened.
"Zariah," was all he said in that notoriously calm voice of his.
She couldn't move and words escaped her. Why did he still have this effect on her? Especially when he looked like her absence had meant nothing to him. Anger fueled her when she noticed that he looked perfectly fine and didn't even show any signs that he missed her.
"Why did you pay off the loan?" she asked. There was no need for greetings, its not like Kachi would have acknowledged it.
His eyebrow lifted in confusion. "What are you talking about?"
"You can't deny it. You're the only one who knows me here and have the power to clear off that much money."
Kachi didn't say anything in reply, he just continued to stare at her.
"Why did you keep sending me money even when we were no longer seeing each other?" she asked again.
"Why do you think?" There was something about the way he was looking at her now. His gaze seemed to have softened but still carried all that intensity. It was almost like the way he stared at her before seducing her.
"If I know, I wouldn't be asking. No Nigerian male would spend millions on a girl they fucked for just a few weeks. So what is it?"
"Please have a seat," he said.
"I don't want to sit. Please answer my question so I can move on with my life."
Kachi stood up, pushing his chair back as he rose, then he rounded the table until he was right in front of her. She'd forgotten how small his presence made her feel, and having him here, and so close like this was too much to handle. Aria took a few steps back and he followed.
"You tell me why I did all that," he said, still walking with her.
"I don't know," she stuttered. Her back was against the wall and Kachi didn't stop until they were so close. He rested his head against hers. "What are you doing?" If she moved a few inches, their lips would be touching. That knowledge was enough to get her body heating up. She'd missed his smell, his voice, the warmth of his body, everything. She didn't realize just how much until he was standing before her and she got the feeling that she could finally breathe again.
"I like you, Zariah." He crushed his lips against hers but she struggled. She couldn't accept an explanation as simple as that.
"No." She turned away from him. "No, you don't like me. This is just you being your usual confusing self."
Kachi chuckled then took a step back. He was still close, but at least she could finally inhale without fearing that she'd pounce on him. "So was it just fun for you? Was it all about the money and the sex for you? There's no way you didn't feel what I felt. I know you did." He stared into her eyes and she forced herself to look away before he hypnotized her out of her home training.
"I don't understand. Why? How?"
"I don't know. I can't stop thinking about you and even when I know I can't want you, I find myself doing things to put me in your path," he said quietly.
"But you left," she reminded him. "You completely ghosted me for three months, Kachi."
He turned away from her and she feared that he'd revert to his cold self. "I have a meeting now. Lets talk later this evening. I'll call you."
This was it, he was asking her to leave and she knew it would probably be the end again. Should she tell him? Would it make any difference? He said he liked her, not loved. Was that enough for her to confess her actual feelings for him?
Before she could make up her mind to ask, there was a knock on the door and Tope pushed it open.
"Your two o'clock is here, sir." She left after Kachi said to bring the person up.
"I'll call you. Just go for now," he said to Aria.

"So when did he say he'll call?" Pete asked her. It was past eight in the evening and she hadn't heard from Kachi yet. She knew she was stupid to actually wait by her phone."He didn't say when." She bit her fingers and Pete eyed her.
"Stop eating your nails. He's just a man," her friend said. "I searched for him on Instagram today. Have you seen his account before?" he asked, attempting to distract her.
"No."
Pete passed his phone to her and let her scroll through his page. "His father is a governor. The governor of Anambra state and I've been seeing posts about that man running for presidency next election."
Most of the pictures on his page were from different functions, most for the bank and a few from fundraisers. He was dressed mostly in suits but she found a few where he was wearing senator and cap, and he looked really good in the native attire. She saw a random selfie there and he was smiling at the camera. She stared at it for a while, not paying attention to what her friend was saying until he grabbed his phone from her.
"I don't know who she is though, but they seem close," Pete said.
Aria furrowed her brows in confusion. She hadn't heard a word he said after he talked about Kachi being a politician's son. Her focus had been on the handsome man who had said he liked her. "Who?"
Before Pete could answer, her phone rang and she immediately grabbed it. Her face brightened when she saw that it was indeed Kachi calling.
"I'll excuse myself," Pete said then sighed. She waited for him to shut her door as he left before she answered.
"Hey baby," Kachi said.
