Seb grabbed hold of his car keys off of the peg in the kitchen. He couldn't believe how excited he was about the day he had ahead of him. He felt like a schoolboy about to embark on a date with his crush, but he wasn't. He was going for a hike and a picnic in the forest with his best friend and their combined five children and two dogs.
Three months had passed since he'd met Savannah Matthews, and she really had changed his life for the better. He hadn't felt this happy and contented for a long time.
His desire for her had not abated, neither had Myah's attempts to get them together, but he'd stayed strong. His blossoming friendship with Savannah meant a lot to him and he wasn't prepared to risk it. If it all went wrong he wouldn't be the only one hurt, his kids adored her and their little hearts would be broken. He'd already seen that happen once before, he wasn't prepared to let it happen again.
"Are you girls ready?" he called out as he reached the bottom of the stairs. He heard them running across the landing towards the top of the staircase.
He went into the lounge where Oliver was sat crosslegged in front of the television watching PJ Masks.
"Come on Oli, it's time to go. You can finish watching that later." He switched the television off.
"Don't want to go. Want to watch Catboy."
"Come on. Sav's coming." Oliver's face lit up. He jumped to his feet.
"Sav!" he exclaimed. Seb laughed. Sometimes he thought Oliver loved Savannah more than he loved his own father.
"Bruno!" Seb shouted. He heard the sound of the Labrador's claws on the laminate hallway floor. Bruno ran into the lounge and jumped up at Seb, nearly knocking him over. "Steady boy!"
"Silly Bruno," Oliver giggled.
The girls walked into the room, both dressed in shorts and T-shirts and a bucket hat.
Seb grabbed his own cap off of the coffee table and pulled it onto his head, squashing his curls down. He still hadn't had a haircut, he really needed to before he and the kids went on holiday the following Wednesday. He was taking them to Majorca for a week.
He was really looking forward to it but he knew he was going to miss Savannah a hell of a lot. Bruno was going to stay with her while they were away.
"Right, come on kids. Let's get cracking," he exclaimed. He'd already loaded up the car with everything they needed. The three kids all cheered excitedly.
"Where Sav?" Oliver asked.
"Sav will be following us in her car. We don't have room for everyone in ours."
"I can't wait to see Savannah," Myah said. "She is so cool!"
"I can't wait to play with Casey," Heidi added. They went outside. Seb locked up and then unlocked the car. Bruno jumped into the back seat and made himself comfortable between Heidi and Oliver's seats. Seb had moved Myah's seat into the front to make room for Bruno. He made sure all three kids were secured safely and then climbed in himself. He put his belt on and started the car up.
He drove slowly towards the gates, they opened automatically now as he'd had a new sensor system installed on the inside. As he pulled out onto the lane he saw Savannah climbing into the driver seat of her car. She was wearing an extremely short pair of denim shorts and a baggy multicoloured floral cami. She'd tied her hair up in a high ponytail and was wearing a pair of sunglasses. Seb smiled as he recognised the sunglasses as a pair of his he'd lent her when she'd come over the previous week for a barbecue. He didn't know how to explain how it made him feel seeing her wearing something of his. It gave him a warm, fuzzy feeling inside. He slowed the car down to a stop as he drew level with hers. He opened his window. Savannah opened the passenger window of her car. He saw Max sat in the front seat, engrossed in some game on his Nintendo Switch.
