Rufus sat on the kitchen floor looking up at Savannah, guilt written all over his furry face. Savannah returned his stare, trying to be mad at him but he was so adorable. On the floor next to him was the remains of the joint of beef she'd taken out of the freezer the night before to defrost for hers and the kids dinner.
"Oh Rufus," she sighed, sinking down to sit on the lino. She put her arm around him and hugged him. She had no idea what they were going to have now. She wasn't doing her shopping until Thursday, which was two days away. The fridge was nearly empty and the cupboards were bare. Having the kids off on summer break meant the food that would usually last a week hadn't even lasted five days. She just didn't know where Max put the food. She was convinced he must have hollow legs.
"Oh well, I guess I'm ordering pizza," she told Rufus. "Dopey dog."
She briefly wondered whether she should invite Seb and the kids over to eat. They would be going on their summer holiday the following day and she was sure the kids would love to spend an evening together.
Then she scowled. It was Tuesday. Seb had asked her if she wanted to go out to dinner but she'd heard nothing from him since Sunday, apart from one word answers to her texts. It was as if he was avoiding her. Maybe he was.
Savannah's face turned red as she remembered their "almost kiss" in the forest. Maybe this was his way of telling her that it should never have happened.
"Why are you sat on the floor Mummy?" said Casey from the open back door. Savannah looked up at her.
"Rufus ate the dinner," she said.
"Naughty Rufus," scolded Casey. She sat down on the floor next to her mother.
"Do you fancy pizza?" Savannah asked her. Casey smiled, showing off the gap where her tooth had fallen out a week earlier.
"Can Sepastinun come eat pizza too?" Savannah hesitated. Maybe it was better if he didn't come over. She still hadn't forgotten how aroused she'd felt when his lips had been so close to hers.
"I think he will be too busy honey. They go on holiday tomorrow remember?" Casey pouted. "They won't be gone long. Maybe they can come for pizza when they get back."
Savannah hauled herself to her feet then set about cleaning up the mess that Rufus had made.
After she'd finished she shooed the disgraced hound out into the back garden where Max was sat in the shade under a large oak tree playing on his Nintendo Switch.
She sank down onto a deckchair and found herself wondering yet again what Seb was doing? Had the near miss the other day changed things between them? She hoped not. It wasn't as if they'd actually done anything. Well not together anyway, she thought, blushing as she remembered getting herself off over him.
She kept telling herself he was probably just busy getting ready for his holiday. He had three kids to pack for after all.
She decided to give him space, then maybe after his holiday things would hopefully go back to normal.
She'd see him in the morning anyway. He'd be bringing Bruno over. She laughed, wondering how much trouble the two dogs would get into together. She knew one thing, she'd learnt her lesson about leaving meat on the counter top.

Seb zipped up Myah's case and breathed a sigh of relief. That was it. Everything was packed. They were ready for holiday. On one hand, he was really looking forward to it. It would be nice to get away and see different places. On the other hand, he knew he was going to miss Savannah a lot.
