Demodogs

It was now night and Steve, Dustin, Lucas, and Max was sitting inside our now armored bus waiting for Dart to take the bait. I was sitting on top of the bus on look out duty. I turned my head when I felt a presence behind me, it was Max. She just sat down next to me for a couple seconds and then spoke.

"It's kinda awesome." She said.

"What?" I said looking at her confused.

"The fog, I mean." Max said. "Looks like the ocean." She continued.

"You miss it?" I asked her referring to California.

"What?" She asked.

"The ocean, the waves? California?"

She just shrugged and looked down.

"I bet Hawkins seems pretty boring?" I said trying to lighten up the mood.

"No.no.no, it's not that, it's just that." She trailed off.

"My dad is still there, so..." She continued.

"Why?" I said interrupting her.

"Well you see it's a legal term called divorce." Max said jokingly

"See when two married people don't love each other anymor-" She started but I cut her off.

"Yeah, I know what it means." I laughed.

"My mom and stepdad." She said but stopped. "Wanted a fresh start away from him...As if... as if he was the problem, which is total bull." She continued.

"And things are just worse now." She finished.

"What do you mean?" I asked with furrowed.

"My stepbrother always been a dick, but now he's just angry all the time...and." She said

"Well he can't take it out on my mom so..." She trailed off.

"He takes it out on you." I finished for her.

She didn't say anything but just looked at me with and unreadable expression.

"I don't even know why I'm telling you this. It's just...I know I can be a jerk like him sometimes." She started.

"I don't want to be like him...ever." She continued. " I guess I'm angry too, and I'm sorry." She finished.

It was silent for a moment for Max said something else.

"Jesus. I don't even know why I'm telling you this." She said wiping her tears away.

"Hey. You're nothing like your brother, okay?" I said looking at her.

"You're cool and different, and you're super smart and beautiful and like totally tubular." I continued.

"You know, nobody actually says that." Max laughed.

"Well I do now." I said smiling at her.

"It makes you seem really cool." She said sarcastically.

"Hey I'm sorry." I said

"Why?" Max said looking confused.

"For not including you and not telling about everything, I was being a bad friend and shouldn't have done that." I apologized and she smiled.

"I like talking to you Madmax." I said smiling at her.

"I like talking to you too stalker." She said smiling even more.

We just sat there smiling at each other before they was a loud growl.

"Lo, what's going on up there!" Dustin screamed.
