IONA HADN'T expected to see him again. He was a figment of her imagination, a puzzle piece that completed the chaotic scene that was her past. Yet, here he was, staring at her with that same bewildered look.
He hadn't expected to meet her again either.
"Ona," Jakob grins. Though she can't see his mouth through the mask, his eyes crinkle at the corners and he has that excited tone, "I... I can't believe we meet again."
Iona didn't speak.
She was on the edge of trusting him, considering he had rescued her from the prying eyes of the Azgedan soldiers wishing to hunt her down; but she also hadn't seen him since they were both children.
"You've changed," He noted first, and Iona couldn't help but make a small noise of agreement.
She remembers when he was this thin little kid with chubby cheeks and a constant, fiery blush. Now, he looked strong. Sharp jawline, fierce eyes, a teasing, yet gentle smirk, and a muscled body beneath his outfit.
He'd certainly changed more than Iona; she was sure of it.
He used to be obsessed with flowers, donning pretty little crowns around the village, and giving them out as gifts to the little girls who stared dreamily at the beautiful accessory.
Iona was never one of those girls, but he kept trying. Every day, he'd offer her a blue flower, or a pink one, or maybe an orange one, until one day, she finally took the flower. She wore it behind her ear, and he swore she was destined to be a flower princess.
Well, definitely not, but it was a cute mental image.
However, those days of friendship had long since ended. When Iona split, so did her ties to everyone within the Ice Nation.
Jakob happened to be one of those ties.
"What are you doing here?" Iona sighs out at last.
Jakob was the last person she expected to fight in a war, let alone for the Ice Nation. The Ice Queen had never been kind to him, and his life was always better off in a different environment; but he never made the change.
Instead, he (clearly) allowed his current environment to change him, instead of the other way around.
Jakob cocks a brow, leaning against the tree shading the pair from the eyes of the army. If they were to catch them, both would certainly face death, as Jakob's loyalty would be challenged, and Iona would be captured as the criminal she remains in her homeland.
Abandoning the throne when it's destined to be yours can only lead to trouble, after all.
"I could ask you that," Jakob scoffs, crossing his arms. "Why are you stalking the army? Not causin' anymore trouble, right? I doubt they'd forgive you."
Iona rolls her eyes.
Should she tell him?
It was something she had to think about, truly. If she told him she was in any way, shape, or form related to Wanheda, he might allow his greed to rise to the surface.
Then again, he could help Iona sneak past.
"I'm looking for someone," Iona huffed out finally, making her decision. "They passed through here. Of course, you and your deadbeat-" Jakob sent her a glare, "-army got in my fucking way."
Jakob didn't seem entirely convinced, shaking his head. He crouched down, beginning to play with a collection of leaves. Crumpling them in his hand, he spared Iona a glance, "Tell me the truth, Ona."
Iona mentally cursed, a harsh exhale escaping her nose.
He always knew how to read her.
"Wanheda has been taken," Iona revealed, narrowing her eyes at the boy who merely smirked knowingly, "and one of your men has captured her. They passed through here around five minutes ago. Happy?"
"Good enough," Jakob stood, smiling.
He glanced around, eyes carefully watching the army as they strode past. He looked conflicted if only for a second, before hiding it with a large grin.
Outstretching his hand, he gestured towards a pathway between the trees, one where they could successfully sneak around the army and in the direction Bellamy said Clarke had been headed.
Iona stared at his hand before looking up at him, then wordlessly brushing past.
He hummed, shrugging his shoulders, before jogging to catch up with her.
