FROM THE ASHES
— 10. Ignored
THREE YEARS LATERThree years had passed since Shaera had given her advice on who her brother should remarry. Did he listen to her?
No, he hadn't. He had married the worst possible option and it even stunned Shaera speechless.
Alicent Hightower.
His own daughter's closest friend.
Shaera couldn't believe it but honestly, she shouldn't have been surprised. She had seen the girl sneaking around, visiting the king as a companion in his grief.
It was clearly no doubt Otto's idea.
The girl had already given birth to a son. A son many presumed would now be named heir given he was nearing his second nameday.
Shaera stood in the courtyard alongside Viserys, watching on as Viserra sparred with a son of one of the lords staying at court. Viserys didn't care all that much a girl was sparring with the sons of the lords residing at court. Not when Viserra was just a daughter of the king's sister.
She wasn't a Princess. Not like her brothers, who were considered princes.
"She's quite handy with a sword," Viserys commented. They watched Viserra's blade deadlock with the young boy's, just before she shoved him to the ground.
"Just like her namesake," Shaera replied, smiling proudly at her only daughter. Shaera herself was familiar with a sword because of Daemon. He had insisted on sparring with her as children, even though he won everytime.
Shaera didn't really care for fighting. She'd rather use her mind to defend herself.
Viserra, however, was the opposite. She was a girl with only brothers. Just like her mother. But she chose to spar with Rhaegon, unlike Shaera who had rather explored as a girl.
"Rhaegon had placed a sword in her sister's hands the moment she could walk," Shaera added calmly, earning a smile from Viserys.
"I recall the same happening to you," Viserys pointed out and Shaera only smirked, "Perhaps history does repeat itself."
"Indeed," She agreed, clapping as Viserra pinned her opponent to the ground.
She and Viserys had rekindled in the four years since she had returned to court. They were brother and sister, after all. The only thing that had ever divided them was Daemon and Daemon wasn't there.
Shaera knew she had to keep her brother close. People knew he was sick and grew sicker as each year passed. Aegon was only a babe and Shaera could already smell the ambition and talk of war in the air.
Men already whispered amongst themselves. Who would choose Rhaenyra as their next ruler when she now had a brother?
