FROM THE ASHES
— 43. Mended Bonds
Daena had left the two brothers in the hallway with a part of her knowing a fight would occur between them. She didn't care, though. She knew Rhaegon was no match for Daemion's protectiveness of her. He was foolish for being so quick to anger, failing to remember there was a reason the girl was known to be untouchable.Yes, she could defend herself but she rarely had to. Not when she had numerous people who would kill to protect and defend her.
Nor was she arrogant enough to believe she ever stood a chance against the man. He was a fighter said to be far better than even his father and she was out of practice.
Wishing to find peace after the chaos, Daena found herself traveling to her children's nursery. She knew they'd still be sleeping but it felt comforting to be around them anyway.
Upon opening the door, Daena frowned when she found Shaera standing between the beds of her great-grandchildren.
"You can't just walk in here," Daena complained, frowning as she glanced at the two guards posted outside out of the door, "How did you even get in here?"
"You forget I'm a princess of the Seven Kingdoms," Shaera reminded her and watched as the girl shut the door to give them privacy, "Each of my children once slept in this nursery. You included."
The woman began to smile and approached her granddaughter. "Do you feel it?" She found herself asking, "That unconditional love? That feeling in your gut that--"
"You'd do anything for them. Kill anyone who dared to harm them," Daena finished her sentence and Shaera nodded her head in response, "Sometimes I come here just to look at them. A part of me fears that if I'm away for too long, something will happen. I love them more than I love anything. Even myself."
"I know the feeling all too well," Shaera reached for the girl's arm but sighed as Daena pulled away.
"And yet, you abandoned me. No visits, no raven. Nothing," Daena complained, her eyes filling with sadness as she looked at her grandmother, "Four years of nothing. I've written you dozens of letters and yet, I've not got one in return."
Watching Shaera's eyes shift, a part of Daena believed she was truly shocked. How could she be?
"I never received any raven from you, Daena," Shaera declared, proving Daena's assumptions to be true.
She forced herself to snap that thought out of her mind. She refused to allow herself to believe it, not when it could be a lie. She knew her skills when it came to lying came from Shaera and it made her wary of anything the woman said.
"There's no need to lie," Daena insisted as she forced herself not to tear up, "I know you disowned me long ago. Long before I married Aemond."
Shaera began to tear up at Daena's words, her heart breaking at what the girl believed to be the truth. "That simply isn't true, Daena!" She tried to convince the girl, who was just as stubborn as the rest of her family.
