FROM THE ASHES
— 24. Four and ten
Shaera had learned quite quickly that Ser Harwin was to be sent back to Harrenhall. With him, the King had ordered Ser Morro to escort him, much to Shaera's disappointment. She knew what Viserys was doing. He knew the truth of both men lying with the princesses. And Shaera couldn't blame him for his decision. Why should Ser Harwin leave while Ser Morro stayed? After a small council meeting had been called, Shaera found herself sitting in boredom beside Rhaenyra. Alicent sat across from them, unable to take her eyes off Shaera.
Shaera couldn't help but smile at the sight, knowing the woman was still upset about Ser Criston. Shaera's son had attacked a man of the Kingsguard without any punishment. It felt like a slap in the face to Alicent, knowing all too well Aegon was yelled at for any inconvenience he had caused. And yet, Daemion could do no wrong in Viserys' eyes.
"It is Lord Blackwood's contention, therefore, that the Brackens moved the boundary stones in the dead of night and put their horses to graze in his field," Lord Lyonel explained, earning an annoyed look from Shaera.
She hated the repetitive mention of the Brackens and Blackwoods. She found the feud to be stupid. It had gone on for centuries, Shaera wondered if they even know what they fought about anymore.
"Why was this issue not brought before Lord Grover?" Alicent questioned, a part of her looking frustrated, "Has he grown so feeble, he cannot settle a quarrel over rocks?"
"I've heard tale that Lord Grover's son now rules Riverrun in all but name," Jasper Wydle informed the council.
"Well, he is also a Tully and this remains a Tully problem," Alicent retorted and Shaera turned to her. She was the queen, how could she not care about her people and choose to toss the issue onto someone else instead?
"I would agree," Viserys quickly agreed with his wife before Jason Lannister moved to speak up.
Before he could, Rhaenyra was quick to interrupt. "And yet, the Brackens and the Blackwoods will use any excuse to spill each other's blood," She explained, earning a questioning look from Alicent, "So this dispute bears looking into. There will be countryfolk who know where the lines have been drawn for generations."
"That is easy enough," Lyonel replied to Rhaenyra, obediently nodding his head.
"I agree with my niece. If you leave both houses to continue acting like this, it will show we don't care. That the riverlords can do as they please without consequences. Chaos will ensue," Shaera explained, earning a low chuckle from Alicent.
The Hightower woman smiled sarcastically and grabbed her cup of wine. "Of course," She muttered under her breath, refusing to acknowledge the glares Rhaenyra and Shaera sent her way.
"Ser Tyland," Lyonel called out, hoping to change the subject.
"Uh, we should address the latest developments in the Stepstones, my lords," Tyland announced, earning a loud groan from Viserys.
