FROM THE ASHES
— 42. What Would Viserra Think?
Unsettled by the whole ordeal at the dinner, Daena downed the rest of her wine in one gulp. It was her third glass since arriving, hoping to be drunk for the rest of it. She could feel in her gut the peace would not remain and chaos would ensue. In a way, she relished in it. It needed to finally happen instead of it all being pent up.Her glass empty, Daena turned to Aegon. She smiled innocently, holding it out for him to fill.
He obediently grabbed her cup and rose from his seat. He cleared his throat and instead of going toward the wine near Aemond, he approached the one between Jace and Baela. He stepped between them, leaning toward Baela as he grabbed the pitcher. "I, um..." He trailed off and Baela turned to look at him, "I regret the disappointment you are soon to suffer. But if you ever wish to know what it is to be well satisfied, all you have to do is ask. Daena will surely tell you the same."
At Aegon's words, Jace slammed his fists against the table and stood up. Aegon casually walked away from Baela, trying not to smirk as he sat back down beside Daena.
"Jace," Baela warned the prince and gestured toward the right of them.
Slowly, Jace noticed how Aemond had stood up in an attempt to intimidate him before he did anything stupid. A part of him felt as though it hadn't been just because of that but how Aegon had insulted Daena.
Aegon smirked, satisfied by how Jace seemed uneasy. He glanced around, noticing It had gained the attention of the rest of the family.
Jace smiled, forcing himself to remain calm. He playfully slapped Aegon on the shoulder, trying to make it seem as though they were completely fine. He turned to Aemond next and raised his cup. "To Prince Aegon and Prince Aemond. We haven't seen each other in years, but I have fond memories of our shared youth. And as men, I hope we may yet be friends and allies. To you and your family's good health, dear uncles," He paused, the slightest of smirks appearing on his lips as he turned his attention to Aemond, "And may you and Daena be blessed with many more children."
Upon hearing his words, Daena raised her head to stare up at Jace. She glared at him, knowing he had done it on purpose. She watched as he briefly turned to Rhaegon, who sent his stepson a proud look.
She balled her hand into a tight fist, knowing Jace wouldn't insult her like that without encouragement.
"There are so many insults I'd like to spout out right now. Things that would make him and Baela cry," Daena whispered to Aegon, practically trembling with rage, "But for the sake of everyone in this room, I will not."
"Please do," Aemond pleaded from the end of the table, having heard the conversation. He leaned back in his seat, smiling slightly at her, "It's getting a bit dull with all this sappy talk of our childhood."
