FROM THE ASHES
— 35. Sapphire
A fortnight had passed since the birth of the twins and Daena had remained in her chambers. She had refused to leave their side, a part of her fearing if she left even a moment, something bad would happen.Aegon hadn't bothered to come to see her, which disappointed her. She shouldn't have been surprised, even Aemond had predicted it.
It was just before sunrise and Daena laid in bed, awake. She stared out of the nearby window, watching the light slowly creep up from the east.
She turned her head when she felt movement on the bed. She sighed, noticing how Aemond was beginning to wake up.
Since the birth of the children, Aemond had slept in separate chambers. He agreed with her on that, feeling as though four of them in the chambers was too much.
There were nights like the previous night when Aemond didn't even bother to leave. Not that Daena had any objection.
She liked the company. She rarely saw Daemion anymore and Aegon had abandoned her. Aemond was the only one she seemed to interact with anymore besides the twins. Alicent would come to see the children, but barely interacted with Daena herself.
"Do you ever sleep?" Aemond questioned, earning a small smile from Daena.
She turned to face him, her eyes fixed on his eye patch. He refused to take it off even when he slept, much to her frustration. She was curious as to what it looked like, to say the least. No one had seen the aftermath of Driftmark, not even Daena.
"Not really," Daena shrugged and slyly reached toward his eye patch. She flinched as Aemond roughly grabbed her wrist, knowing her intentions. "Why won't you let me see it?" She complained, letting out a loud, dramatic groan.
"Why do you want to see it?" He retorted, releasing his grip on her.
"Is it disgusting?" Daena bluntly questioned and Aemond shot her a glare, "Come on, Aemond. What can I say? I'm curious. I promise I won't judge."
Aemond remained silent, not budging. He refused to look at her, feeling her eyes burn into him.
Daena scooted closer to him, much to Aemond's annoyance. "Need I remind you, you watched a baby come out of me, I think I can handle a lost eye," She pressed and Aemond seemed to relax a bit.
He stared at Daena for a moment, noticing how she wouldn't stop until he agreed. He nodded slightly and watched as she began to smile in satisfaction.
His hand reached for the patch, reluctantly pulling it off his face. He watched as Daena laid eyes on the wound for the first time, his expression not changing.
He was surprised by her actions, not seeing any disgust or horror in her features as her eyes scanned over the scar.
"It isn't as gory as I was expecting," Daena remarked, much to Aemond's amusement, "You should put a gem in place of the eye. It'll make you look intimidating."
