The next day, you got to the Favonius headquarters five minutes late. You cursed yourself for spilling your coffee this morning and entered Kaeya's office. He was sitting behind the desk looking at papers. He barely glanced up when you entered.
"Six minutes late," he said monotonously, "That means I owe Lisa a thousand Mora. I bet her that you would be at least ten minutes." You rolled your eyes and walked over to him.
"Listen, about last night at the Angel's Share..." you started, unsure of where you were going. Kaeya looked at you blankly.
"I meant what I said about making your life a living hell," he stated, "which is why today, you'll be cleaning the entire stables by yourself." He smirked at you evilly. "Hop to it. Have fun rookie." You seethed and resisted the urge to sock him in the face right then and there.
"I'm not a rookie, I've been here just as long as you have. Why can't you do it?" you snapped, "Or at least help me?" Kaeya winced dramatically.
"Sorry, I can't," he replied dramatically, waving the papers in your face, "I have paperwork to do." He smirked once more and then went back to rifling through the packet of sheets he held in his hand.
Something about this paperwork caught your eye. You snatched them out of his hands. The papers Kaeya was looking at were blank sheets of parchment.
"Hey!" he yelped as you examined them to confirm they were, indeed, just plain pieces of paper.
"What the fuck are you doing? These pages are blank." You gave him an unamused expression.
"Lesson one of being in a position of authority, rookie," he began, standing up, "Always look busy, even if you aren't." He walked towards the door and used two fingers to beckon you to follow him. You begrudgingly caught up with him and walked next to him.
"That first bit of advice is free, but any more is gonna cost you," he remarked, "Especially since you cost me this morning." You huffed and crossed your arms.
"Once again, I'm not a rookie. Stop calling me that. Where are we going?" you asked. He sighed in annoyance.
"Can't you ever just trust me?" he retorted. You looked over at him, irritated.
"Is that even a question?" Kaeya thought for a moment, smirking.
"Touché," he admitted. You raised your eyebrows in surprise as you exited the Knights of Favonius Headquarters and rounded the corner to the training ground.
"What are we doing here?" you asked in annoyance, watching him move some stray training dummies off to the side.
"The amount of questions you ask per minute is absolutely astonishing," he remarked sarcastically, "I think you might have a world record." You glared as he smiled mischievously.
"Maybe if you ever answered one of them I wouldn't have to ask so many," you shot back. He sighed softly, maintaining his smile as he stood at the center of the training ground. Your eyes widened slightly as he drew his sword.
"You said you wanted to settle things, didn't you?" he uttered, a twinge of something sinister behind his voice. Your face fell from a surprised expression into a determined one as you drew your sword in turn.
"For once, Kaeya, I think you and I are on the exact same page," you commented before quickly lunging towards him with your sword. He quickly blocked you, but you had another attack ready. You sliced towards his head but he easily ducked under it and countered your attack, which you were able to block, but only barely.
Nervousness began to flow through your body. Maybe you had underestimated him. You pushed his sword back and he took a few steps back, fake-yawning to make fun of you.
"I didn't think it would be a challenge, but I didn't think it would be this easy," he remarked, chuckling. You gritted your teeth in anger and came at him again, this time with more ferocity.
Kaeya's confidence faltered for a moment, but he still managed to keep up blocking your attacks with ease. You tried everything. You parried his attack and tried to counter, only for him to counter right back, sending you stumbling back again. You grunted in frustration.
"Would you quit playing around?" you snapped, gripping your sword hard, "I feel like you're just patronizing me." Kaeya laughed.
"If you really want me to not hold back, I can," he replied and took his fighting stance.
"That's exactly what I want," you said, your swords clashing again.
It was during this string of attacks that you realized you were going to lose. You definitely underestimated his skills, considering how lazy he was. But that didn't mean you were going to give up. If you were going to lose, you were going to fight as hard as you could to at least get a couple hits on him.
"Go down in a blaze of glory," you thought as you fiercely swung again and again at Kaeya. You sharpened your mind and became one with the fight. You almost felt your body dissolve as you became engrossed each swing, step, and block.
Kaeya began to feel a bit nervous. You suddenly had the upper hand, and he didn't like it. He gritted his teeth and tried to focus in on his movements to block each of your strikes. He started to sweat. Your ferocity was his biggest concern, because the more angry you looked, the closer he got to getting hit.
Kaeya was annoyed. He expected this to go quite differently. He thought he would be sitting in his office again by now. He had enough.
"FREEZE!" he yelled and blasted you with a Cryo attack, which knocked you on your ass. Before you could get up, the tip of Kaeya's sword was pointed at your neck. He looked down at you pridefully. You glowered up at him.
He used the flat side of his sword to tap under your chin gently.
"Touché, rookie," he said smoothly. He flourished his sword and put it away, then extended his hand to you. You indignantly slapped his hand away and got up using your own strength.
"You cheated," you seethed, dusting yourself off.
"I was going to win anyway," he remarked nonchalantly, "I was just getting bored." You resisted the urge to clap back because you knew he was right.
"You're a terrible swordsman," he commented, causing you to glare daggers at him, "you should really consider switching weapons."
"Thanks for the unsolicited advice," you grumbled and started walking towards Headquarters again.
"Where are you going?" he asked. You turned back to him and gave him an expectant look.
"I thought I told you to go clean the stables, rookie," he continued, still gloating. He walked past you and clapped a hand on your shoulder.
"Have fun~" he said.
