"Welcome to Mondstadt! Please don't rob, murder, and/or pillage in our city," Kaeya said suavely to the couple entering the front gates of Mondstadt.
"Kaeya, would you stop fucking saying that?" you shouted angrily as the couple gave you both worried looks as they scurried into the town.
"Nope!" Kaeya snapped back, "It's funny. Get a sense of humor, PLEASE. I beg of you." You scoffed at the disrespect.
"I have a sense of humor," you argued, "That joke is NOT FUNNY. It wasn't funny the first time, and it still isn't after you freaked the fuck out of the last twenty people!"
"Well it definitely won't be funny after we get robbed, murdered, and/or pillaged," Kaeya replied thoughtfully, trying not to smirk too deeply, but failing miserably. You scooped up a stray pebble off the ground and threw it at him from across the opening of the gate, but he quickly dodged by ducking under your throw.
"NOBODY IS GETTING ROBBED, MURDERED, AND/OR PILLAGED!" you yelled, infuriated.
"Alright, alright! Barbatos, I'll stop saying it," he cursed, holding up his hands to block his face as you picked up more pebbles and chucked them his way. You huffed when you were satisfied and turned away from him to take a few deep breaths. Kaeya rolled his eyes.
"You are such a buzzkill," he grumbled and leaned up against the wall beside the front gate, crossing his arms defiantly.
"I thought you and the gate guys were friends," you commented angrily, then whipped around to face him, "Not very cool of you to fill in for them while they're sick only to ruin the reputation of the city they've been trying to protect."
"Swan and Lawrence do the same thing," he informed you matter-of-factly, "Who do you think taught me to do it?" He shrugged, his eyes going upward and his eyebrows raising a hair.
"Liar," you stated, your expression flat. Kaeya held for a minute, but then groaned and sighed.
"See? You're no fun. This is why I stopped lying to you," he muttered. You rolled your eyes and tried to reject the smile trying to inch its way onto your face.
"No, you stopped lying to me because you know it won't work on me anymore," you shot back. He held your gaze, smirking, so you felt your cheeks light up with heat.
You had gotten quite familiar with this dance. To everyone else, you were the same Y/N and Kaeya: constantly fighting and arguing over the smallest of things. But inside the world that existed only between the two of you (and his brother, oddly enough), this was your foreplay. The constant battle of wits in a fight to the death over the last word in combination with having only each other to talk to for the past eight hours was dangerous. You felt like you were a secret society consisting only of the two of you. (And, of course... his brother.)
You glared at each other, feeling the afternoon Mondstadt sun beat down on you. It was a hot spring day, but even worse than that, it was humid. Your uniform pants stuck to your thighs and you felt sweat dripping down the small of your back. You squinted in secretly playful anger at Kaeya's glowing face. You screamed at yourself to not let your eyes drift down to his glistening, muscular exposed chest yet again, but failed. When you finally pulled your gaze back to his face, his smirk became even more sinister. You knew you had fucked up.
"Good evening," a merchant from Liyue greeted, snapping you both out of your staring contest.
"Good evening!" Kaeya replied sweetly then looked at you evilly.
"Kaeya, don't fucking-"
"Welcome to Mondstadt! Please don't rob, murder, and/or pillage in our city," he chirped cheerfully as the merchant stopped in his tracks, stunned. Suddenly, you burst into flame, startling the merchant again. The air was tense as you and Kaeya glared at each other. The merchant looked nervously from you to Kaeya and back again.
