The gingerbread house competitions are coming up soon. It's tradition for Seokjin to enter the competition— but there's... someone who he expects to see enter as well.

Jeon Jungkook.

Every Christmas, he and Jungkook compete to win this competition. They've been back and forth every year as the winner, and it's the talk of the town.

They've become competitors, always amusing the judges and the familiar families of their little town.

This year is no exception.

Their houses are made from scratch— they're told to make them at home and kick off the Christmas festival with their presentations.

This year, Seokjin has made something completely out of the box— his usual strat.

Jungkook's houses are always pretty and fancy. Seokjin's are always eye-catchers or so out of the box that it catches the judges' attention. This year, his gingerbread house is actually a boathouse because he's been into fishing recently and at this competition, any form of house is accepted. His boathouse is hidden under his tiny curtain to be revealed and he wonders what Jungkook made this year.

As they go down the line, Seokjin's is to be introduced first.

He unleashes his small curtain and shows off his Christmas boat— it has tiny lights across it, gummies acting as windows, frosting along the bottom as water, and a little fishing gingerbread man.

The judges are familiar with Jin's love for fishing lately and so is Jungkook, he's sure, because he can see Jungkook playfully roll his eyes once he sees the boat.

He gets positive reactions and probably creativity points, if he can guess.

When it's Jungkook's turn, he uncovers his house and— as usual— it's a neat and pretty gingerbread house. He's even drawn a face on his gingerbread man, which gets positive wows and wide eyes.

His art is too good. Damnit.

When all the competitors have presented, the judges go back to their table and whisper to each other. Seokjin can see one of them point at him and then to Jungkook, which makes his heart race.

What're they saying?

Eventually, they choose a winner and are ready to announce.

"The winner of this year's gingerbread house competition is..." They add silence for dramatic effect, then the lady in the middle points with her hand and— "Kim Seokjin!"

Seokjin's heart doesn't feel tight anymore and he cheers loudly with his fists up in the air, wrapping his arms around his friend Hoseok who's next to him because he'd dragged him into the competition just because.

Hoseok cheers with him, but it isn't two seconds after that Seokjin turns his gaze over to Jungkook, who's silently covering his own house back up, accepting defeat.

After he accepts the prize medal, they give second place to Jungkook and third place to Hoseok, who Seokjin cheers even louder for than he did himself— because that's his best friend who just won!

But after it's all over, Seokjin leaves his boat for the town children to eat as he normally does and he walks over to Jungkook, who's getting ready to leave as well.

"Jeon Jungkook," he says. His rival looks up at him and is obviously about to congratulate him, but Seokjin cuts him off. "Your house is really pretty. I honestly think it should've been a tie."

Jungkook sort of scoffs. "Yeah, right. You even had lights on yours."

"Pretty cool, huh?"

Jungkook rolls his eyes and picks up his house, ignoring Seokjin.

"Ah, come on," Seokjin continues. "Your house is really pretty and your little man has a cool face. That evened out the creativity on my side."

"Why are you trying to convince me?" Jungkook asks him, raising a questioning brow at him. "You won. There's no need to pity my loss, Seokjin."

Seokjin huffs as Jungkook tries to walk away. He follows beside Jungkook. "I'm not pitying, I'm being serious. I know we always compete against each other, but I think this genuinely should've been a tie."

"Don't worry," Jungkook chuckles, "I'll beat you next year anyway."

Seokjin snickers as they get to Jungkook's car and he loads his house into the back. "Jungkook-ah, why don't we just.. settle this? We could go back to my place and make houses together."

Jungkook really raises his brows now. "What? Why would we do that?"

"Oh, come on, don't act like such a stranger. You've literally been to my house. We have the same friend group. Just come over and we can make some cute houses for our friends. As a Christmas gift!"

Though Jungkook wants to look unamused, he fails. "Fine. But only because I'm bored."

Bored. Sure.

They end up driving to Seokjin's apartment after the festival is over and Seokjin shows Jungkook the extra gingerbread he has to work with, which is a lot because he overestimated his measuring.

The Christmas lights Seokjin's decorated with is a nice touch, along with the Christmas music that Jungkook plays as they start molding and making tiny gingerbread houses together.

It's a lot more fun than Seokjin thought it'd be.

Jungkook is friends with Seokjin's friends and they've hung out with their friends together, but never alone like this before. It's nice even though they make a mess in Seokjin's kitchen. It's nice to hear Jungkook singing along to Christmas songs and it's nice to see just how focused his rival gets when he makes his houses– it makes Seokjin appreciate his competition a little more, to see him in action.

"Hey, Jungkook-ah."

He holds up the decorative mistletoe that his friend Jimin tried to get him to hang up when he was helping Seokjin decorate his apartment– he holds it up as a joke.

Jungkook instantly blushes and nudges Seokjin's hand away. "Dummy. Why are you holding that up?"

Seokjin smiles seeing Jungkook turn red and all flustered, but he puts the mistletoe down and laughs lightly. Even so, Jungkook wipes the frosting off his hands and then reaches up to Seokjin's jaw, pulling him in and pressing a quick peck to his cheek. It shocks Seokjin, but in the best way possible.

Jungkook goes back to working on his mini gingerbread house, clearly trying to avoid eye contact, and Seokjin smiles even wider than before as the moment sinks in.

Jungkook is pretty cute.

Maybe Seokjin doesn't mind his competition after all.
