It was Valentine's Day, and since we spent the last holiday alone, we decided to have a family Valentine's Day. Besides, it's not like Bobby and I would do anything to celebrate, really.
"Where are we eating tonight?" I asked Bobby as I sat next to him on the couch.
"It's a surprise."
"Just tell me. I won't ruin it for the boys," I said.
"Nope. I won't ruin it for you," he replied.
"It can't be anywhere too fancy. . . I'm sure I can guess it," I said.
"Just be ready at 5:30. Our reservations are at 6 and we need travel time."
"Reservations?! We don't need to go somewhere that requires reservations!"
"It's Valentine's Day," he said. "Of course we do."
"It's family Valentine's Day. Like our kids need to go to restaurants that fancy," I said.
"It's okay to take them to high-end places every now and then."
I rolled my eyes.
"Are you mad at me?"
"No. . ." I sighed. "I don't know what I am."
"Mama! Mama! I drew you a picture!" Lucas yelled and ran over to me with a piece of paper.
"Is that a heart?" I asked as he sat on my lap.
"Yeah. And that's you," he pointed at a person standing in the heart, "and that's Daddy," he pointed at a very tall person in the heart, "and that's Ness," he pointed at a very tiny person in the heart, "and that's me!" he pointed at another person in the heart.
"I love it!" I said excitedly. "In fact, I'll go put it on the fridge right now."
I got up and walked to the fridge before grabbing a magnet and using it to stick it to the fridge.
"Okay, we better start getting ready for supper tonight," I said. "At least, I should."
I went to the bathroom and quickly took a shower. I then tried to decide whether I should wear a dress to dinner tonight or not. I decided I wouldn't, because I was pregnant and not in a dress mood today.
The worst part of surprise restaurants for dates was figuring out just how dressy I should dress. Like, my outfit was fine, but do I curl my hair? I need more than just eyeliner on, right? Plus, I have to remember that the boys are coming along and this isn't an award show. Usually when I'm with the boys I'm not overly dressy, unless they're invited to an award show with me, which happens around three times a year.
Eventually, I got over the "what the heck am I going to look like tonight" panic and met Bobby and the boys in the living room, dressed up and ready to get a young child ready to go.
Bobby went into our room to shower and change, and I started getting Ness dressed. He had a little dress shirt and some khaki shorts, so I put him in that and he seemed happy. I added a clip-on tie for a minute to see what he thought of it, and he didn't fuss, so I left it. Bobby returned then, and we made a small conversation before he offered to watch Ness while I got Lucas ready.
Lucas was a little pickier than Ness, but I could at least get him to wear a dress shirt. He just had to choose the shirt, which I realized probably came from the fact that I let him pick his clothes on a daily basis.

Somehow, there were no meltdowns at the restaurant. In fact, I somehow didn't feel weird that we brought our two under-four-year-old children to a five star restaurant tonight.
