Going to New Jersey was much easier said than done.
I forgot about the fact that we hadn't been there with three kids yet, and we had to bring a Pack-N-Play, a bunch of newborn baby diapers, frozen milk, and all the other essentials for newborns that we didn't have in the house there. We would have to buy another crib for that house.
We actually had to buy a crib for our house in California. Zelda would soon be too big for a bassinet, and she would be moved into Ness's room. But it was obvious that Ness was not on board with moving into the new room.
Mark and my mom were coming with, but Dad decided to stay back in California. He had some form of plans or something this weekend and we weren't sure when we'd be back. Mom said he just needed to have his "alone guy time", something she referred to even when we were young kids.
The flight was awful. Ness was fine until we got off the ground and he got scared and started freaking out. Lucas, who had been out of the terrible two stage since March, decided to take a trip back to those times and throw a fit when he couldn't have a piece of candy until we landed. I had some chocolate in my purse (because why wouldn't I?), but he'd been fussy all day and really didn't deserve it. Plus I wasn't really one to share chocolate very often. Zelda was fussy as soon as she woke up. After changing her diaper, she continued to cry. After being fed, she continued to cry. After being given a set of plastic keys, she continued to cry.
Basically, we had three crying kids on the plane and four very annoyed adults. Bobby and Mark were trying to have a normal conversation over the cries, I was rocking Zelda in my arms in hopes of stopping the loud cries, and my mom was trying to distract one of the boys.
About halfway through the flight, Zelda cried herself to sleep. Ness was over his fear apparently because I hadn't heard anything about it for a while. Bobby had finally grown tired of Lucas's constant whining and crying, and after getting a stern lecture and a threaten to take a nap, he calmed down.
They weren't necessarily happy, but they weren't upset enough to be wailing anymore.
I was feeling very tired I now realized, and curled up on the couch and fell asleep, hoping I wouldn't be awoken until we landed.
***
Somehow my hope came true. Zelda hadn't woken up since she cried herself to sleep (surpringly) and Ness had one small meltdown that must've been over before it could escalate much.
When we landed, there were two sleeping children and one very much awake one.
"Mama, I was good the whole plane ride! Can I have a treat?" Lucas asked.
Even though I wasn't one to share chocolate very often, Lucas had a point. Since the tantrum at the beginning of the flight, he was extremely well-behaved. Plus, Ness was asleep, so I didn't have to worry about begging because I was unfair.
I dug in my purse for a rectangle of chocolate and handed it to him with a smile. "You were a really good boy on the flight," I said.
"Thank you, Mama," he said, starting to open the chocolate.
I then dug in my purse for a chocolate of my own. Bobby looked at me.
"I was just as well-behaved as Lucas," I said. "If not, better."
He sighed. "You're right."
As I finished the chocolate, I went to put Zelda in her carrier as Bobby tried to get a stroller ready outside the plane to put Ness in. Zelda didn't make a move as I put her in her carrier and set the carrier on the couch.
Ness, on the other hand, woke up almost immediately after Bobby picked him up. He seemed to be better behaved now that he'd slept, though. He didn't throw a fit right as he woke up, and he wasn't begging for any candy or anything.
He was being really quiet, though, and didn't say a word as Bobby set him in the stroller.
"Ness, do you want some milk?" I asked softly as I carried Zelda out of the plane.
He nodded.
"When we get into the airport, I'll get you some milk," I said.
He nodded again.
Lucas was overly excited. Not for the milk, just that he was excited in general. He was a little bundle of energy, and I hoped Sarah was in the mood to be around a little ball of excitement.
Before we knew it, we were walking into our "vacation" house. We referred to it as that, but it was really just another house for any time we were in New Jersey. Much like the apartments we had in New York and Chicago. They were just places for us to stay that felt more like home than a hotel room.
"Mama, can we see Sarah?" Lucas asked just as we walked in.
He didn't know anything had happened to Sarah, he just knew that she was here so we could visit her.
"Uh, we're gonna get settled in a little before we see Auntie Sarah," I said.
"But I wanna go now!" he whined.
"Did you bring any trucks?" Bobby asked, changing the subject.
Lucas nodded.
"Why don't you play with those? Maybe Ness will, too," he suggested.
Somehow, that distraction worked. Ness still was being quiet, but he drank an entire bottle of milk since we left the airport, and he was up to playing with Lucas.
I gave them the bag of toys and Lucas started taking them out. Ness sat by him, pulling out a truck every now and then.
With them distracted, Bobby and I could get all of our stuff settled in the house. Zelda was still sleeping soundly, which was very surprising.
We needed to her stay asleep until we got the baby stuff out of one of the closets anyway. Plus, we needed to set up something for her to sleep in.
An hour later, we had Zelda asleep in a Pack-N-Play, all the newborn baby stuff out, any food we brought put away, and everyone in the house was hungry.
At this rate, I thought we'd never see Sarah. Mom and Mark were planning on seeing her at, like, 5:00, and we were planning on seeing her at the same time. But it was about 4:30 now and we were hungry.
So, in order to see Sarah, I postponed supper. We ate cereal before we set off to Mom and Mark's hotel.
We were finally going to see Sarah, and I didn't know if I was more excited or nervous.
