I sat down next to Bobby on the couch, holding Zelda and watching the boys play with some toy trains.
"I think we need to notify someone about Sarah," I said softly.
"What?" he asked.
"Your sister said her car was in the garage and that it didn't seem like she just decided to leave. She said the door was unlocked and she said a bunch of other things that are just odd. Bobby, something isn't right."
He looked at me. "OK. Who are we calling?"
"First," I said, "let me call Lauren and see when she last talked to Sarah. Then we'll get into all the cops and security and stuff."
Lauren hadn't heard from Sarah in about three days.
"Should I be like... hiding, Christina?" Lauren asked through the phone.
"If it makes you feel better. I mean, there's no promises that it's Sean. There aren't even any promises that she's missing. But I think maybe you should stay at someone else's house at least until we figure out what exactly is going on."
I made it a priority not to let the public know. Things would get chaotic the second the public knew anything about this.
"Who do we even call?" I asked.
Bobby shrugged. "I don't think they'll do anything. She lives on the other side of the country. They'll say that you don't have enough evidence that she's missing to do anything."
"Are we going to New Jersey?" I asked. "Is that what I'm hearing? That we're packing up the kids and going to New Jersey until this is figured out?"
"I'm not saying that, honey," he said calmly. "I'm just saying.... maybe you should get some other people to check in on her. Just to be completely sure about whether she's missing or not."
"Bobby, we can't wait for too long. I know that if he has her, he's not wasting any time."
"Christina-"
"I'm calling someone else to check. She would definitely come home between now and three. I'll tell them to look at three."
He pulled me close to him, tightening his arms around me.
"It'll all be fine," he whispered.
Zelda started wiggling around in my arms as I got someone else to check on Sarah. I repositioned her, but she continued to move around.
"Why are you being such a wiggle worm suddenly?" I asked in a baby voice.
She started fussing and I sighed.
"I don't know what you want, honey," I said softly.
"Here," Bobby said, holding his arms out.
I handed her to him and she immediately stopped fussing.
"Someone just needed Daddy," I mumbled.
Lucas then needed me down on the floor to help him and Ness with the trains, but Sarah was sticking in the back of my mind all day.
***
By the time I woke up the next morning, there were search parties out for Sarah all over the east coast.
I assumed it was Sean. I assumed it was him getting his revenge, and I assumed he was out to get more than just Sarah.
Lauren was staying with a friend in New York. She was close enough that she didn't need to quit her job or anything, but far enough that if he was looking for her he wouldn't find her.
