I started following Bobby downstairs to see why Lucas was crying so much, but he said that "it'd be safest if I went down alone, just in case."

I tried to protest, but he shook his head and headed downstairs. I knew he'd be angry if I followed him, so I just stayed upstairs and listened intently.

After about three minutes of just sitting there and listening to Lucas as he cried, I went down there to see what was wrong.

The crying died away as I got down there, and I figured Bobby had taken care of him.

But once I got downstairs, I saw Bobby just looking at Lucas, seeming confused.

"What's up?" I whispered.

He shrugged. "He wasn't crying when I came down, and I've been looking around to see if there's an electronic on or anything, but I'm overall very confused."

I shrugged back and he followed me up the stairs.

As we made it up the stairs, the crying started again. We both started going down again until a thought occurred to me. I tapped Bobby on the shoulder and pointed to Ness's room.

"Why does it sound like it's coming from downstairs?" he asked.

"I don't know," I answered.

I turned around and started toward Ness's room though, and I was slightly ashamed that I suddenly couldn't tell the difference between Lucas and Ness's cries.

As I opened the door, I realized the crying sounded like it was coming from downstairs because Ness's face was buried in a blanket.

I picked him up and noticed that Ness wasn't awake yet. He'd been crying through his sleep that whole time, which explained why the cry didn't sound familiar. He thought that whatever was happening in his nightmare was real. I guess I'd never heard his true cry of this much fear.

As soon as I'd picked him up, he woke up and his crying turned slightly softer as he understood he was actually fine.

I pulled him against me and rocked him back and forth, shushing him in hopes that he would calm down.

"It's okay, Ness. It's Mommy. It was a dream, honey," I whispered under my breath as I rocked him back and forth.

I brought him into the living room and sat down on the couch, letting his crying die down.

Bobby brought over another bottle of milk, which he'd been drinking more of today than he normally did in a week. I started feeding him, and he was eventually holding the bottle himself. His tears were drying on his face and he was staring at me, as if he was wondering if I were real or not.

Once his milk was gone, he seemed fine. He didn't shed another tear. He just continued to look at me curiously. Eventually, he poked me in the nose.

"What's up, Ness?" I asked quietly.

After a few minutes of him just looking at me, I got up to put him in his bouncer so I could make my way to the bathroom.

As I sat him in it, he started whining and I knew he'd start crying again. I pulled him out before he even sat down in it.

"Bobby, can you hold him for a minute? He won't let me set him down," I called quietly.

"Sure," he said from behind me and soon enough wrapped his arms around me from behind.

I started to gasp out of surprise, but played it off as I handed him Ness. "Thank you," I mouthed as he took him from me.

He kissed me on the cheek before I walked away and I smiled as I heard him whispering little things to Ness like, "Okay, Ness, what's going on here?"
