Everyone started taking out their books

Everyone started taking out their books. I looked for mine but I didn't seem to find it anywhere.

Uh oh. What now? I could've sworn I had it with me.

"Psst, Max. Do you mind if we share a book? I can't find mine," I whispered.

Max smiled at me and said, "I'd love to."

I smiled.

"Thanks, Max."

"Anything for you Mel," he said, winking at me.

I couldn't help myself. I started blushing. Thankfully, he looked away and didn't see me. He took out his book and turned to the right page. I tried to keep my thoughts quiet just in case he decided to read my mind again.

I've got to ask Alex how to keep my thoughts hidden at times.

Mr. Martinez asked someone to start reading. Suddenly, a sharp pain crept down my spine. It felt exactly the same as the day I fell on the sand and Alex helped me up. I tried to ignore it but it seemed to be getting stronger.

Max must have noticed that I was in pain because he whispered, "Mel, are you okay?"

"Hm, me? Oh yeah, I'm fine," I lied.

"Don't play games with me. You don't look too good," he said with a serious tone.

I finally gave in. I couldn't lie to him.

"Fine, fine. I'm in a little bit of pain right now."

"Well, you're probably feeling like this because you're gonna be able to shift soon," he said. "I'd take you to the clinic but I wouldn't want you to miss out on the lesson. I know you take your grades seriously," he said.

I tried to act like the pain was going away.

"It's okay, Max. Don't worry about it. I'll go to the clinic later today."

That seemed to calm him down a bit.

"Okay, but I'll go with you." he said confidently.

"Thank you, Max," I said, smiling at him.

He smiled back.

"Anytime, Mel."

We concentrated on the rest of the lesson and finally the bell rang.

"Don't forget, there will be a test next class!" he shouted.

Everyone groaned on the way out and headed to their next class. I was almost the last one to get out because I always pack my stuff at the end.

I was going to put on my book bag when Max out of nowhere said, "Here, let me help you with that."

He took my book bag and carried it, along with his, all the way to my next class.

When we got there, I said, "Aww, thank you so much, Max! That was really sweet. How could I ever repay you?"

He tucked a strand of hair behind my ear and said, "By never leaving my side."

I blushed but smiled at him.

He smiled back at me one last time before running to his next class.

Max is the best.
