Mel's POV
I lay there quietly listening to Max's heart beat.

I'm so glad Max doesn't like Veronica.

I almost fell asleep in his chest when I heard someone say, "Maximus? May I come in?"

He quickly set me on the bed as gently as he could without hurting me and went outside. I heard him talk to someone for a moment before letting the doctor come in with him.

"Mel, when I was running tests, I found something weird with your blood levels. It's like you're not fully human. Another indicator is how you're healing rapidly as we speak. Are you a shifter?" he asked.

"Yeah, but I'll tell my mom if you don't mind? Where is she anyway?" I asked, looking for her with my eyes.

"Maria, you can come in!" Max shouted.

My mom came in with a worried look on her face. When she saw me, her face lit up.

"Mel, you're awake! Is something wrong?" she asked.

"No, everything's fine but I have to tell you a secret that I was planning on telling you before all this happened," I said, seriously.

She nodded her head and I said, "Mom, I'm a horse shifter. It means that I'm human but I can turn into my horse when I close your eyes and think of my hair color as a horse," I said.

"Oh my gosh! Why didn't you tell me? This is so cool! Is Max one, too?" she asked, excited.

I was pretty surprised at her reaction. I thought she would get upset. The doctor and my mom turned to Max, who nodded his head. My mom's smile grew wider.

"Maria, the reason Mel is a horse shifter is because, well her horse, Beauty, is also one. Her human name is Alexandra but we call her Alex for short. She told Mel everything there is to know about being a horse shifter and soon enough, she decided she wanted to become one," Max said.

My mom looked at us, shock on her face.

Max continued.

"That's when I felt a pull towards her. Mel's my mate, which is why that pull exists. Jonathan, my best friend, is a werewolf and he also felt a pull towards Alex. It brought us together," he said, a smile forming on his face.

"Alex is the girl you saw talking to me, if you remember. We'll introduce her to you once we get home. Also, horse shifters tend to heal up pretty fast," I said, with a smile.

"Yes, she's right. She healed up pretty quickly. She may go home now," The doctor said with amazed by our story.

"Thank you so much, doctor. Now, let's go to the car so I can hear the rest of the story!" she said, excited.

I swear, she's like a child sometimes. It's cute.

We left the hospital and Luisa started calling my mom and talking to her about us being horse shifters. When she hung up, we got inside the car.

Max let me go inside first.

"Ladies first!" he said, with a smirk.

"Such a gentleman, aren't you?" I asked, teasing.

I entered first and he sat next to me and intertwined our hands. I gave his an extra squeeze.

"So, what else is there to know about horse shifters?" mom asked, breaking the comfortable silence.

"Don't worry, mom. When we get home, we'll unlock Beauty's stall and you can get advice from the expert," I said, giggling softly.

"Okay then. Max, your mom told me that she got in a bit of a delay getting out of work so you're welcome to stay with us for a while," she said, looking at us through the rear view mirror.

"Oh thanks Maria, I'd love to," Max said, giving me a smirk.

I slapped his arm lightly and he pouted, "Heyyy, don't hurt your mate!"

"Well, watch it with the smirks," I said, laughing.

"I just can't control myself when I'm around you, babe," he mindlinked me.

I shivered and gave him a warning look.

"Not here." I said, trying to sound serious.

He chuckled softly and flashed me a smile. I couldn't help it. I smiled back at him.

"See? Admit it, Mel. You love it when I'm with you," he said, with a smirk.

Getting cocky are we?

I rolled my eyes at him, secretly enjoying it, and asked my mom, "Mom, are we there yet?"

"Yup!"

She turned the curve and we got out of the car. There, Beauty saw me and nickered.

"Beauty, Max and I already told mom about us being horse shifters and she'd like to meet you in human form," I said.

She nodded and quickly shifted into her human form.

She opened her stall and said, "Hi, Mrs. Rodriguez. My name is Alexandra but my friends call me Alex for short."

She smiled at my mom and shook hands with her.

"Oh please, call me Maria. It's nice to meet you, Alex," my mom said, smiling back.

"We are terribly sorry for not telling you anything before. We were just scared of how you would react, but now that you know, Max and Mel are going to be shifting as well," Alex said, a huge grin on her face as her eyes went from me to Max.

"Let's go to the lake!" I shouted, playfully.

Max laughed along with mom and Alex. We all walked to the lake and Max and I closed our eyes and shifted at the same time. The cracking of bones was pretty loud this time.

My mom winced in pain before asking, "Alex, is the cracking of bones part of the process?"

"Yes, it really doesn't hurt once you get used to it. Also, when you're in horse form, you can mindlink with other horse shifters as well. For example, Mel can mindlink Max by just thinking about him and saying what she wants to say to him," she said.

"Hey, Max?" I mindlinked him.

"Yes, Mel?"

"Thanks for saving me. I mean I probably would've still been knocked out on the floor if it wasn't for you."

"Don't say things like that, babe. I love you and I'll always be here for you. I'll never let anything or anyone hurt you," he said.

"Max, maybe I'm not good enough for you. I mean I feel awful for making you take it slow and you deserve someone better," I said.

"Mel, you're already the best mate I could ever ask for. Don't say otherwise. I'll show you what I mean later. Come on, let's shift back," he said, softly.

We shifted back into horse form and I acted like everything was fine.

"So there you have it, mom. That's the story of a horse shifter."
