"Mmm." Moon hummed quietly to himself, sitting in the back seat of the car. His head rested against the window as he watched the tree pass by. "Like a king, I may live in a palace so tall. With great riches to call my own. But I don't know a thing in this whole wide world. That's worse than being alone."
He sang in a quiet, low voice. Rick and Hershel sat up front, they could barely hear him, but they enjoyed how calming he sounded. It was rare Moon felt comfortable enough to sing around anyone besides a Glenn. But when he did, those who heard always enjoyed it.
"My dad sang that to me when I was young." Rick spoke when Moon finished humming the rest of the song. The car was quiet, Moons singing was the only thing passing the time.
"Glenn liked that song when he was younger, too. He would always sneak into my room when he thought I was sleeping and sing it to me." Moon smiled at the memory. Glenn would have nightmares and the only way for Moon to calm him down was if he sang.
Glenn thought if he sang too, Moon would sleep better. The man remembered how he would stumble over the lyrics and mix them up by accident. Moon would pretend to be sleeping because he knew Glenn liked to help. And that was his way of helping his big brother.
Hershel chuckled fondly. "He's a good man, we all have you to thank for that." Moon grinned to himself, looking at his lap sheepishly. "No, he's always been sweet, since the day he could talk." The conversation brought up many memories he was happy to remember.
"For a long time, the only thing he would say was love Moo. My parents hated it. They were just mad his first word was Moo." His grin turned into a smile. He was so happy when Glenn said his name. It was the first time Moon actually felt proud of himself.
"That's why people call you Moon, not Moorti?" Hershel thought back to when Glenn called him by his real name. Of course, he assumed Moon was short for something but Hershel never actually stopped to wonder what it was short for. "Moorti? Why would he call you that?" Rick glanced at Moon through the rearview mirror. Confusion written all over his face.
"My name's not actually Moon, it's Moorti. Glenn didn't know how to say my name until he was two, he's always called me Moon. I guess other people don't really ask, maybe I look like a Moon, I don't know." Moon shrugged. It never bothered him, he preferred Moon anyway.
Rick frowned to himself, how did he not know Moon's name wasn't actually Moon? His name always fit his personality, Moon was unique. It was only fitting his name was as well.
"Moorti? Really? Moorti Rhee. What's your middle name?" Rick tried the name out, and he decided he liked Moon better. "I don't have one. I'm just Moorti Rhee." It was as simple as that. Moon has never thought further into it.
"But Glenn has a middle name, Amari, right?" Rick recalled Moon scolding Glenn using his full name some months ago. "I named him, not my parents. I saw it in a newspaper and liked it." Moon never told his brother he was named after some guy whose funeral just so happened to be posted in the newspaper the same day he was born.
"Moorti." Rick repeated the name to himself, trying to get used to it. "Is there anything else I should know about you?" He felt a little stupid for not knowing. They've known each other for over a year, literally spending every day together. The least he should know was his friend's real name.
Moon thought for a second. "My left hand is kinda bigger than my right hand. I have a birthmark on the side of my left butt cheek, I don't like the smell of lemons, I like the taste, not the smell. I sweat really easily but don't get hot. I dropped out of high school. Both Glenn and I can play the piano, he's better than me though."
Moon hummed, thinking of some more. "I prefer my toothbrush to be blue, it makes me feel cleaner. I can do the worm. I hate when there's stuff under my nails. I lost my virginity to my Spanish teacher when I was fifteen. I am terrified of crocodiles like I would cry if one chased me." There was a story for that one.
