Tw: Uncomfortable to read
1996
Winter has always been Moon's least favorite season. The cold and the snow bugged him. His feet were constantly wet, his nose was always runny. And he could never seem to keep his hands warm. Glenn on the other hand loved it. He always grew excited at the first sign of winter.
Christmas was his favorite holiday after all. Which is why the two brothers were outside playing in the snow. Well, Moon was just scowling as he shivered on the porch. Glenn was happily laughing to himself, rolling around in the fluffy snow.
The thick layers Moon wore did nothing to keep him warm. His jaw jittered up and down, his runny nose was bright red. Glenn didn't have the same problem, he was cold. But he was having too much fun to think about that.
"Look Moon, I made a snow angel." The eight year old said with a bright smile, proudly pointing at his work. Moon stood up to see, he gave his brother a shaky thumbs up. "T-that s-s-so good. B-bud." He stuttered from the way his jaw kept moving.
Glenn noticed and frowned. "It's not that cold Moon, are you sick?" The little boy walked towards his brother, beginning to worry. It really wasn't as cold as Moon thought it was. Moon just felt the weather a lot more than others. For example, when it was hot, he felt ten times hotter. He didn't mind that, he actually liked it. But when it was cold he was ten times colder. And he hated the cold.
"No-no. K-keep playing. I'm okay." Moon forced his jaw to calm down, he clenched it tightly. The little boy went to go back to his snow angel, but his big brother standing made him stop. Something caught Moon's eye, a cop car at the end of the street.
"Shit." Moon was quick to pick his brother up, rushing inside. He pushed the creaking door closed behind himself, his eye immediately going to the peephole. "Aww Moon, you said I can play." Glenn pouted, still dangling in Moon's arms. Moon shushed him, watching as the police car stopped in front of their house.
Moon carried Glenn to his room. "It's the cops, you know what to do, right?" The little boy nodded quickly, now understanding why he couldn't play anymore. "Okay." Moon left Glenn in his room, rushing to the bathroom.
He turned the shower on before running to his room to get his speaker and Walkman. Moon took off his coat, gloves, hat, and boots. Adrenaline masked the chills going down his spine as his frozen fingers shook.
The boy has been through this a few times before. Recently, the police have been coming to their home for checkups. Moon knew it was Miss Giaz. She was doing anything she could to get Glenn out of the picture.
The woman expressed her 'worries' for the two brothers. Now Moon has been struggling to find a way to keep the law away. He turned the speaker on, setting it on the bathroom counter. Elvis filled the bathroom. The pale boy lowered the volume so the shower could still be heard. Just as he expected, there was a knock at the door.
Taking a deep breath, he calmed himself. Only a few more years and he would be old enough to adopt Glenn, he could do it. Casually opening the door, he smiled at the female officer.
"Hello, ma'am." His voice changed, it sounded more mature. Kind of like when your parents talk to a doctor or teacher, it just sounded different from how they talked to you.
Moon had that voice too. Glenn called it his dad voice. "You're Moorti Rhee I presume. I'm Officer Kelly. Is your mother or father home? I'd like to speak with them." The woman smiled back, her face softening as his smile grew bigger.
