Even with the thick winter coat Moon wore, his jaw still jittered up and down as a big gust of wind blew right into him. "M-mother-" He groaned in frustration before wiping the fallen snow off his face with his gloved hand.
Three months have passed since the war ended. The houses that were bombed during the Saviors raid had to be rebuilt, even in twenty degree weather. Moon knew nothing about building or construction, he hardly knew the different names for all the screwdrivers.
Half the people working on the rebuilding shared the same qualifications. But the work had to get done one way or another. Whoever was able to help, helped.
Moon Jr was below his dad, holding the ladder he stood on. "Why can't I do it?" The teenager asked, wanting to help with the roof like Carl was. The other boy was a few feet away, hammering in the new shingles for the roof that was blown up.
"Cause you fell last time. Then you started crying in front of everyone." Carl answered for his dad, Moon's chapped lips parted, prepared to scold the boy on being nice. But a shaky puff of breath was all that came out as he continued to shiver. He gripped the hammer he held, banging a nail into the frozen wood with a frustrating struggle.
Moon Jr frowned, "It hurt. You can cry if you're hurt." The boy was doing the same job Carl was now, and he was doing a good job for a while. Until he got distracted by a cloud shaped like the Statue of Liberty and started staring.
He somehow managed to slip even though he was on his knees, which ended up with him rolling off the high roof and into a pile of snow. Of course, the tears started even if it didn't hurt that bad.
The snow cushioned his fall, but the boy still sobbed his heart out like he had broken something. Which freaked Moon out, the father was so scared he also ended up falling from the roof and into the same pile of snow as his son.
The whole scene was more dramatic than it needed to be. The group of workers that rushed over were panicked, Moon Jr only started to cry harder when he saw them.
In the end, Moon Jr wasn't allowed to do anything that required his feet to leave the ground. Moon was left with a nasty bruise on his hip. While Moon Jr had a bruise on his left elbow.Working in the conditions they were, it wasn't safe at all. Rick wanted the houses to be at least livable as soon as possible. They started rebuilding just a week after the fight was over. And in the three months since, everyone was able to rebuild a good amount of the houses. Enough to allow the residents of Alexandria to come home for good.
The Hilltop had quickly become overcrowded, people were tired of sleeping in hallways with no privacy or personal space. The people of the Kingdom went back to their homes the night the fight ended. Only a building had been destroyed during the attack on the Kingdom.
The windows at the Sanctuary were replaced in just a few days. The people were compliant, they did all the work with little help from any of the other communities. That's where Rick was, Moon expected him home in just a few hours.
Moon Jr looked around, watching as the workers finished up the last of the homes. Red brick surrounded the community, every house was rebuilt with it.
"When can we paint, Moon?" Moon Jr thought it would be fun. "A-fter win-ter." Moon stuttered out a reply, the hat and scarf he wore didn't stop his nose or cheeks from turning bright red.
The boy sighed, pulling his hat from his head as his ears started to get too hot. He was taking a break, Moon Jr started before Moon and Carl. He got up early to organize all the tools, nails, bolts, and screws. To him it was like Legos but an adult version. It was fun when he wasn't rolling off roofs.
