The living room was silent. Rick and Moon hadn't moved from the couch and it was now past midnight. Moon laid on the couch with Rick on top of him. He held his husband close, finding comfort in the small snores he made.
Moon wanted to sleep but every time he tried closing his eyes they opened again. He huffed when he felt it was taking too long. Moon liked sleeping, it was one of his favorite hobbies. So it was frustrating he couldn't seem to rest peacefully.
He didn't attempt to wake Rick up or move him. Moon liked the position they were in. It was unusual for him to lay on his back but with Rick's weight on him, he felt safe. He imagined it's what animals felt when they squash themselves into small spaces.
The sleeping man shifted slightly, whining as Moon's belt buckle dug into his stomach. "What's wrong baby?" Moon whispered softly. Rick didn't respond but he did tap his belt, giving Moon the answer.
Moon reached between them, struggling slightly to get his belt undone. Rick mumbled something Moon couldn't make out, scooting to lie on his slide so he was between Moon and the couch. His right leg lifted to rest over the hips, his head on Moon's chest.
When the belt was off Moon ran his fingers through Rick's hair. Rick settled back down, snores emitting from his mouth again. The short man thought of Tara. She'll come back to an empty home. Her girlfriend was dead and she didn't even know it.
Moon found that tragic. Loving someone took a lot of courage. Then for it to be ripped away so harshly must have been awful. Moon opened his eyes again, he could hardly see Rick in the dark. But the window allowed the moon to shine through.
One day he would lose Rick. Or Rick would lose him. He hoped that day wouldn't come for a very long time. He wanted to raise their children together. And he wanted to grow old together. But the chances of that happening were slim to none.
The clicking of the front door made him tense up. Everyone was home, to his knowledge. Moon reached for Rick's gun but didn't lift it as he watched the door creek open.
Moon sighed when Carl peeked in. The boy stepped in quietly, trying to close the door slowly. Moon rolled his eyes at his attempt to sneak in. Carl couldn't see him or Rick because the couch was facing away from the door.
The boy wasn't too good at being sneaky and winced when the door shut loudly. Carl paused, trying to hear movement upstairs, where he assumed his parents were.
Hearing nothing he continued to his room, Moon heard his door shut with a soft thud. He shook his head to himself, planning to forget he ever saw that. The man knew Carl frequently snuck out to see Enid, Rick did too.
They didn't try to stop him. They both thought it wasn't worth a scolding. Carl was a teenager, teenagers rebel. If you could even call it that in a life like this. But that's how they grow. Of course, this did lead to a very awkward conversation about sex.
Moon was lucky enough to have avoided that, saying he already had to do it with Glenn. He honestly just thought it was better that moment was between the two of them. It was important to him that Carl and Rick had moments without him. Just father and son.
He saw Carl as his son and Carl considered Moon his dad, his second dad. But Moon understood sometimes Carl just needed Rick.
Moon suddenly wondered if some other man was raising his son. He felt guilty when he realized that would break his heart. He shouldn't feel sad there was a possibility Moon had a dad. That someone else took his place.
