Bianca was in the lead but you and the cats weren't far behind. When Enid came up to you to ask for your help she did warn that Bianca mostly always won. She mentioned some things about sabotage but you doubt the boat would be messed with after all she is in her own boat.
So far the race went well for your team. A team got wiped out on the way to the flag but neither of you thought anything of it, too focused on winning this. You wanted this win for Enid and nothing will stop you from getting it. Enid had run to get the flag leaving you and your other teammates to watch the boat. While she was running you checked the boat again for any signs of trouble but there wasn't anything.
Noticing Enid running back with the flag everyone gets back in position and you all set off to win this race. Your arms were getting restless but now wasn't the time to stop. There was a feeling of confidence in your chest for a while till Bianca's team showed up right beside your boat. No sign of your boyfriend's team. For a quick second, you turned your head to see that their boat was flooded and they were barely moving. Your boyfriend slouched in the back not looking happy. But you can't worry about that right now you're so close to the finish line.
Just as you're passing the almost-there mark something hits your ankle and you hiss in pain. Curse your uniform for not fitting down past your ankles. You ignore it until the water hits your foot and you look down. There was a hole filling the boat with water. You hear Enid make a noise of disappointment. This wasn't the breaking point, your team isn't far from the line.
Somehow even though your boat was messed up you arrived back at the dock first. Your team jumps out and runs toward the end. When you get out there's still a sting to your ankle but you push through thinking it may have been a cut from kneeling on the dock checking the boat earlier. Once you pass the line everyone cheers and Enid throws herself into a hug with you. You're caught off guard but hug her back smiling. This might just be the happiest you've seen her.
A minute later Bianca's team passes, not looking happy. The other eliminated teams are to the side, some soaking wet the others just from the waist down. Xavier's standing next to Ajax neither of them looking joyful. It's weird how only 3 of the boats got struck. Maybe Enid was right about Bianca and her schemes.
"I think you should check on him." Enid nods toward him.
"I probably should."
There's a limp to your walk now but you're still choosing to ignore it. When you get to Xavier his face brightens up and he smiles. "Hi, sweetheart." He says opening his arms to hug you. "Congrats on the win. Thank you for helping Enid."
"Of course, she's my friend too. I had fun."
"Yea?"
"Hey, not to interrupt a moment between you two but what happened to your ankle?" Ajax points out.
"My costume didn't fit around them, why?"
"Not that, you're bleeding."
"What?" Both you and Xavier question in unison. Looking down you see it. There are two wounds there. They almost look like a mix of punctures and scratches. Ajax is right too, they're bleeding.
"What happened?" Xavier asks looking into your eyes with concern.
"I don't know. We were on our way back with the flag and I felt something but I didn't think much of it."
"Hey, it's okay. We'll get it cleaned up. I can carry you back to our tent."
"Xavi, my leg isn't broken." You laugh out at him. "He is always a bit dramatic." Ajax quipped before running over to Enid.
"No, but it is injured and you're obviously in pain. Now, come on." He picks you up and walks the short distance back to the tent. He makes sure nobody else is in there before walking in and setting you on a chair. There's a kit on the table that he grabs and opens.
"I'm going to warn you this may sting." The warning wasn't enough as the alcohol pad hit the wounds. You try to pull your leg back but his grip doesn't allow it. "Can't do that baby. I have to clean it."
"It stings."
"That's because it's doing its job. It would hurt much worse if I didn't clean it. Now hold still this time."
"Please not again."
"It's okay. Just one more time then we can bandage them, yea?"
"Okay."
The pad hits your ankle and you let out another hiss of pain. "That's it, we're done." He states finishing the bandages. Gently putting your ankle down he continues kneeling in front of you. "You okay other than that?" He's mad but you can see in his eyes that it's not directed toward you.
"Yeah, I'm okay. I know who did it."
"I did too. I'm going to talk to her."
"No, Xavi, please. I just want to go change and sleep. I'm tired."
The anger quickly disappeared from his face, replaced by adoration. "Okay, yea we can do that. Ready?" When you nod he quickly places a kiss on your forehead before helping you up.
"Let's get my baby to sleep."
