Lexi growled under her breath, as she watched the helicarrier explode, and fall, crashing down around the Triskillion. SHIELD was no more. She hated, knowing she had a part in it. When Fury had tasked her to follow a lead almost a year ago, she never thought she would find that Hydra still existed, let alone how large they had grown.
She remembers unpicking that thread, finding more and more evidence proving their existence. But finding out, that they had their claws in SHIELD, and many missions, compromised, to ensure Hydra infiltration, it made her angry.
She had worked hard to get to where she was, and to now find that many, especially those higher up, were the enemy from within, she wanted to hunt them all down and kill them.
Standing in the tree line, she watched a body fall from the helicarrier. Pulling out her mini scope, she looked, seeing it was the Captain. As he hit the water, another body followed. She saw that it was the Soldier.
Lexi waited, staying hidden. Fury had told her, that he wanted her to shadow the Winter Soldier, and for her not to get involved in anything, unless it was absolutely necessary. She watched as his head came above the water, and he dragged the Captain out, leaving him on the bank.
She frowned, watching him hesitate, before turning and walking away. She was good at trailing, the best in fact. She followed the Soldier, keeping her distance as he left the chaos behind him.
----------------------------------------------------------
It was almost midnight, and Lexi had continued to follow him. Right now, he was in an abandoned house, on the outskirts of Washington. She was watching from the rooftop, across the street, hidden in the shadows. She knew he was still inside, her scope showed a heat signature in the house.
Pulling out her phone, which was heavily encrypted with anti-tracking software, she called Fury, with an update.
'Adams. How is your trip?'... She could hear how tired he was.
'After today, I am really tired..'.. She scoffed down the phone... 'We're resting up for the night. Probably continue exploring the area tomorrow. How you feeling boss?'
Lexi had always been careful as to how she spoke on the phone. Even with the best encryption software, she could never be too careful.
'Feel like I'm dead. Sounds like you had a good day. Do you need anything?'... He asks, keeping the conversation light.
'No. We're all set. I thought I'd take some time and just enjoy myself. How is the old man?'... She checks her scope again, seeing he was still in the house.
'Took a fall, but he's in hospital. Nothing major but he'll be up and about in a few days. I'll make sure he goes home to his family, they'll need him, and he'll need them. Send me a postcard when you get settled'... She hears him yawn.
'I will. Get some sleep boss. I think you've earned it'... She hangs up the phone, and sighs. SHIELD was gone, and Fury was sending Rogers back to the Avengers. She didn't like the Captain. Too high and mighty for her liking. To be honest, she didn't like anyone, except Fury.
She had great respect for the man. She barely tolerated a few others, but that's only because Fury had asked her to, knowing it was quite a feat for her.
Checking her scope one last time, seeing he was still there. She settled back, using her bag as a pillow, and pulling her jacket tighter around her. She sets an alarm on her phone, to vibrate and tucks it into her bra. It would go off every half hour, so she can check on him again.
It wasn't much sleep, but she was used to it. Closing her eyes, tiredness consumes her.
----------------------------------------------------------
It had been three hours since he settled into the abandoned house. His head was a mess as memories of two different lives clash in his mind. He couldn't shake the feeling, that he was being followed. He wanted to keep running, but he was tired and could barely see straight. Finding old blankets in a box, he pulled them out and gave a quick shake. He grabbed a cushion off the old couch, shaking it out too.
Settling himself on the floor, he laid down, trying to rest. He didn't think he would ever sleep, but he needed rest. Closing his eyes, more flashes ran through his mind. He kept his eyes closed, squeezing them tight, as if he was willing them to go away.
He had spent the next few hours, tossing and turning, only getting about 2 hours sleep in total. He sat up, seeing that the sky was still dark. Shaking his head to try and clear it, he got up and began to rummage around the house, looking for anything useful he could take with him.
He found some clothes that were his size, they were slightly outdated, but were better than the solider outfit he was wearing. He went up the stairs, to the old bathroom, hoping that the water was still running. Once inside, he turned the taps on, and began to strip off.
Washing his face, and his body as best he could, he reached over and wiped the dust off the mirror with his wet hand. Seeing himself, more memories flittered through his mind, as he got lost in them.
---------------------------------------------------------
She watched him through her scope, seeing him move about the house. She could tell what he was doing, by his actions. She sighed, tired and hungry. She guessed he would be too, considering what happened today.
Quietly slipping from the roof, she headed down onto the street. Hiding behind a hedge, she pulled out certain items from her backpack, leaving food, water and a large amount of cash that she had. She made her way to the house, checking her scope as to where he was. Thankfully, he was still upstairs.
Being as quiet and careful as she could, she got closer, and tucked the bag on the back steps. Not in full view, but clear enough it could be seen if he came out the back door.
Making her way back to the hedge, she gathered up her things, and stuffed them in her pockets. She didn't care about him. Honestly, if he died, it would make this so much easier. But she had to watch out for him. That was her mission.
Fury wanted her to stay close, and protect him, without being seen. She was to wait until he settled somewhere, and then integrate herself into his life. Gain his trust, and find out as much information about Hydra as she could from him.
If there were any signs that her or the mission were to be compromised, she was to do whatever was necessary, to bring him to the Avengers. Even if it meant putting a bullet in his kneecaps and dragging him back.
Sighing to herself, she settles down behind the hedge, looking out every so often with her scope. She knew she wouldn't sleep again tonight, so she just pulled out her phone, and brought up her kindle app. Might as well get lost in a fictional man.
