Kai POV
I woke up, and immediately wished I hadn’t. I wasn’t in the field, lying next to the girl I was sure I was in love with, I was in a dark hall. Mist rolled in a thick layer across the ground. Making whatever the ground was impossible to see. And the hall was filled with doors.
Kai: Feels like I’ve been here before. Why is it so familiar?
I moved towards one of the doors, there was a plaque that said something, but it was distorted, so I couldn’t read it. I tried the door, and it was locked, even with my immense strength, the lock did not break.
Kai: If I’m where I think I might be.
I concentrated, and sure enough, a tension rod and a lockpick appeared in my hands.
Kai: So I am, I’m trapped in my own mind.
At the revelation, there was a flash, and I was standing in a house.
Kai: My mind is a house with walls, covered in lyrics.
I looked around, details coming into place, words scribbling themselves over the walls, evidence of a past life, but like the plaque on the door earlier, they were distorted, constantly moving, making it impossible to read.
Kai: They’re all over the place, there’s songs in the mirrors. Written all over the floors, all over the chairs.
I couldn’t make sense of it, so I went back to one of the doors in the hallway, the distorted words following me. Then I took my tension rod, and braced the lock, the inserted the lockpick. I gave it a wiggle, then turned the lock.
Kai: *muttering* C’mon baby, talk to me…
Suddenly I was thrown back into another wall.
Kai: Dammit! I’ll never remember if I can’t get into those doors!
I went back, observing every door. There were a lot of them, and they all had symbols on them, each one different, though there were a few that were the same.
Kai: Places I’ve been, universes, if my entrance into Alrest was any indication, and some are the same, places calling out more than once…
Soon I came to another door, it was the newest, and the symbol familiar.
Kai: *muttering* Alrest.
I could read the plaque, and that’s what it said. My memories of Alrest. I tried the door, and it was unlocked. Unlike all the others.
Kai: I’ll look at you later.
I closed the door. And walked back down the hall, and looked at the oldest door there. I looked as if I could knock it over, though from my experience with the other doors, I would not get it to open. The symbol on it was reminiscent of a house, and now that I looked, it was kind of like the house that my mind took the form of.
Kai: Home. I’m… Home.
I walked toward the place I felt a stairwell should be.
Kai: And you get the uncut version of life when I go downstairs.
The stairs appeared, and I walked down to the bottom floor.
Kai: That’s where I write when I’m in a bad place and need to release, and let out the version of—
My thoughts halted, version
Kai: If I’m here, He is too.
Like clockwork, another door appeared, it was dark, likely made out of ebony, and instead of light coming from under the door, like the others, darkness did, and it pulsed, as if whatever was behind it was charging, gaining power.
