Kai POV

I woke to a bed with no Pyra in it.

Kai: She must have woken up earlier

I slung my sword back over my shoulder, locking it in place

Kai: Let’s go see how she’s doing

I went downstairs to see Pyra sitting at a table, the others must not have been up yet, because she and the innkeeper were the only two on this floor.

Kai: Feelin good Pyra?

Pyra seemed surprised.

Pyra: Oh! Kai! I didn’t hear you come down.

I sat down across from her.

Kai: That didn’t answer my question

Pyra: I’m good. I slept a lot!

Kai: Good to hear.

A comfortable silence fell over us. But I had to ask about her nightmare.

Kai: When I came in to check on you, you were having a nightmare… do you want to talk about it?

She shifted, and looked down at her lap

Kai: I hate pushing you, but you can’t bottle things up inside you forever Pyra

She didn’t look up.

Kai: Something has to give. Talk to me Pyra. You can trust me.

She finally raised her head and made eye contact with me. Her normally fiery amber eyes were filled with tears, and nearly devoid of hope.

Kai: Pyra…

Pyra: Kai… I… There are things in my past… things that I don’t want to remember…

Kai: That’s why you said what you did about memory loss

She nodded.

Pyra: *sniffs* And so nightmares plague me… and the memories never go away…

Kai: Whatever happened Pyra… it couldn’t have been your fault

Pyra: But it was!

Her sudden increase in volume surprised me, and made the innkeeper jump.

Kai: Then tell me Pyra… how do I help you?

Pyra: Y-you can’t… it’s all my fault…

She was sobbing now.

Pyra: *sobbing* I-it w-was a-always my f-fault…

I moved next to her, wrapping an arm around her shoulder. She buried her face into my chest and just, cried.

Kai: Let it out Pyra…

I started stroking her hair, trying to comfort her in any way I could.

Kai: Pyra… it’s alright, leave the past to rest…

She nodded weakly, beginning to calm down.

Kai: *humming*

I don’t even recognize the tune that I’m humming, or at least, know where it came from, it was familiar, as if someone close to me did the same. Regardless, Pyra seemed to be helped by it.

This tune is the Drifting Soul from the Xenoblade 2 this time. Haven’t figured out the “otherworldly” tune yet. Suggestions?

Pyra: W-why are you so n-nice?

Kai: Do you want me to be mean?

She shook her head

Pyra: But… could you tell me?

Kai: It’s because I care about you Pyra

Her face went red, and she hid her face by nuzzling into my chest

Kai: I’m not lying Pyra, I do care, and if you have things you need to work through, I’ll be here for you every step of the way.

Pyra: T-thank y-you…

Kai: You don’t have to thank me Pyra… I’m doing this for you, because I want to.

She tightened her hold on me, she was pretty much clinging to me at this point, but I just smiled, and held her close, comforting her and protecting her from the world.

This one is much shorter, and closer to what I normally write, but I felt like all I needed as a follow up to Chapter 29 was a nice, mushy scene between Pyra and Kai. Chapter 31 will probably get back to the journey, long way before we introduce two new characters at Olethro. You know one of them, the other is an enigma, that will continue to elude you despite my allusions to him, you’ll never figure out the mystery man until the reveal! MWAHAHAHAHA— *cough*  *cough* Kai’s right, that is hard.
