Kai POV

The mercenaries were shocked. And reasonably so. I mean, how often do you see a man appear out of thin air? Wouldn't you be freaked out? Anyway... I explained my sudden appearance and everything is cool. I swear one of these days I'm gonna blow my brains out... Wait. I don't have a gun... Nevermind. We were all sitting around a table, Pyra sat next to me this time, not on me.

Kai: Bummer

We were laughing talking, and eating. Just generally having a good time. One by one, the mercs got up to leave to take care of things, the others were led to where we'd be staying tonight. Then Pyra got up.

Pyra: I'm going to get some water. Vandham?

Vandham: Cheers love! Gimme a beer!

Kai: Mind grabbin me one too?

Pyra: Two beers? Coming right up!

Kai: Thanks Pyra

She left, and I lowered my head and closed my eyes, feigning sleep so Vandham and Rex could talk like they wanted.

Vandham: What's up? The grub don't suit you?

Rex: So do you fight in wars too, Vandham?

Vandham: You got a problem with mercenaries?

Rex: Are you trying to get us to join up?

Vandham: Hah! Shrimps like you? We're not THAT desperate.
Relax.

Rex: OK. Good to know.

Vandham: Hmmm... Rex, you're a salvager, ain't ya?

Rex: Yeah.

Vandham: You musta fished out your share of military supplies, right? You fine with that?

Rex: Nah. I don't wanna get involved with it.

Vandham: It's all the same. Compasses, valves for ether stoves... Armies need all these things. That bread you're eating? It's made from ruska flour. Supplied by the Ardainian government. This world's full of war. Don't matter if you're a soldier or not. As long as you're alive... you're in the war, some way or another. Don't you think?

Kai: Food for thought I guess

Rex: Um, I...

Vandham: Life can be cruel. Crueler than you know. That's why I set up this little band, so I could protect the people I care about. Rex. You're the Driver of the Aegis. The whole world's gonna try and scalp you, you realize that? How ya gonna live, when you got everyone gunning for ya? It'd be easy to run. All you'd need to do is ditch that girl.

Kai: You wouldn't dare

Rex: ...

Pyra came back and handed Vandham and I our beers.

Kai: Cheers

Vandham let out a hearty laugh

Vandham: Cheers!

We thudded our tankards together, then promptly downed them. Slamming the empty tankards on the table. Pyra looked at me wide eyed.

Kai: I'm surprised too. I mean, how's an amnesiac supposed to remember he can hold his beer?

Pyra giggled

Pyra: Fair enough.

Vandham: Hmmm... C'mon! Gotta get ready!

Rex: Wh-where are we going?

Vandham: Just follow me, kid!

Pyra: Where are they going?

Kai: I think Vandham's got a few tricks to show Rex. Then we all head out tomorrow, overheard some of the mercs talkin about a job Vandham's gonna take us on.

Pyra: Ok...

Kai: He'll be fine. Vandham seems like an honest man. May not remember my past but I'm an excellent judge of character.

Pyra giggled.

Kai: It can't be that funny can it?

She shrugged and moved closer to me.

Kai: Cold?

Pyra: *quietly* Yes...

Kai: Come 'ere

I wrapped an arm around her, draping my cloak over her body, and held her close to me to keep her warm.

Pyra: Mmm...

She nuzzled into me, getting comfy in my embrace.

Kai: Better?

Pyra: *softly* Mhm...

I smiled at her, though she looked adorable, she seemed as if she was gonna pass out.

Kai: Now who needs sleep?

Pyra: *mumbling* I do...

Kai: Come on, I'll get you to your room.

Pyra: *sleepy* Room?

Kai: Vandham's gotten us rooms at the inn. You have your own room.

She simply nodded and walked with me as I led her insided and to her room.

Kai: Here we are.

I gently laid Pyra down on the bed.

Kai: Get some rest Pyra.

I started to walk out.

Pyra: *sleepy* Kai... Stay... Cold...

I stopped, sighing.

Kai: Alright move over.

I shut the door and climbed in bed, wrapping Pyra up in my arms and holding her close. Using my cloak as a blanket for her.

Pyra: *sleepy* Thank you Kai...

Kai: Goodnight Pyra...
