Mercy

🦋

Walking inside I hear my Mom talking to someone so me being the nosy person I am, I pretend not to hear her talking and called out for her. It's not that I was being disrespectful or anything. I just found it weird someone was in our home when no one ever visits us unless it's meal time.

"Mom?"
"Not now, Mercy." She called back in a rushed tone.

I raised my eyebrow and walked up the stairs sitting at the top trying my best to strain my ears. She would most likely tell me later, but I was curious now.

"I understand, Alpha, but if we don't do something soon we will all starve. There is only so much I can grow in the garden and the rabbits are not enough. They take-" She tries to get the next sentence out, but was cut off.
"I don't really care, Cheryl. This isn't my problem and it sounds like something you need to fix. I have other things to worry about." He growled.
"But sir." She pleaded desperately.

I hated hearing her beg him. I hated she had to beg him in general. She is truly the glue holding this Pack together.

"No. I'm done talking about this. I am not wasting no more of my time on this matter for a murderous Pack." He sneered.

I listened as he stomped through the house and slammed the front door on his way out. Slowly, I walked down stairs and into my Mom's office where she was in tears. My voice grew soft as my face fell. It broke my heart seeing the woman who has gave so much for us all cry.

"Momma?"

She sniffed while looking away to wipe the tears. She had on a fake smile, but I could see the hurt written on her face. In her eyes.

"Hey, Honey Bun. How did training go?" She smiled trying to cheer herself up in the process.

Maybe I can gloat just this once. It could take her mind off of that Son of a bitch.

"Good, I bested Billy in a spar."

I tried to play it off like it was no big deal, but her smile said it all. It was real this time along with the happy laugh I've missed coming from her lips.

"Mercy, that's amazing!" She laughed while looking to me in awe.
"It's nothing, Momma. I still need some practice and to get some more muscle on me."
"Nothing? Billy is the best male warrior we have." She exclaimed.
"Maybe we're all just really bad because we don't have the necessary resources to train so in reality he is getting rusty."

She sighed annoyed by my own put down.

"Listen, just because we don't have exercise machines and fancy stuff doesn't mean you can't build muscle. How do you think they did it way back when? They built it naturally. They didn't need all these machines. They used what they had and I know you all can do the same." She smiled trying to be positive.

One thing about my Mom is no matter how bad the situation is, she always see's the good. It is sometimes that she has taught me and I have kept with me. She has taught me that whenever something bad happens, always look on the bright side and I have! It's just hard to look on the bright side while living in this Pack. I sat down on the chair across from her and smiled sadly. The look on her face told me she already knew what was to come.

"Mom."
"It's going to be okay, Merce. We'll figure it out. We always do." She smiled reassuringly.
"I don't think so. I think we need to fight harder not just for us, but for the future of this Pack."
"I know and we are, but there is only so much we can do." She sighed shaking her head.
"We are exhausting the game because we are constantly pushing them further out in order to feed our people every night."
"I know." She replied.
"We have no money to spend on food either."
"I know." She replied getting aggravated.
