----------- Chapter 37 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Amazing. A professor and his student, huh?” Pansy murmurs, grinning arrogantly.

She walks into the room and closes the door behind her

“Pansy,” Draco begins, standing up as Pansy holds up a finger to silence him.

“Look, the way I see it, if I tell a soul, the two of you will be ruined. Chances are you would be fired,” she murmurs to Draco, “and you would be expelled,” she spits at me. “So, basically, I’ve got supreme power over the two of you.”

“Please Pansy,” Draco begs, his eyes beseeching her.

“I’m not into guys who beg,” she murmurs easily, sitting on one of the tables.

“Just as well. He’s my boyfriend,” I pipe up, feeling like the two of them have forgotten my presence.

“I’d much rather you not speak unless spoken to,” Pansy informs me, turning away so she’s facing Draco.

“What will it take to keep you quiet Pansy?” he asks defeatedly.

“Leave the girl. Go out with me,” she murmurs simply, smiling bright.

“No way!” I protest loudly. Draco silences me with a look before pondering for a moment. “Don’t tell me you’re actually considering it?” I ask meekly.

“Deid, she’s right. If she tells anyone the both of us are screwed. I don’t care if I get fired, I can go on to find a new job. But you...what would happen to you?” he asks, taking my hands in his.

“No Draco! You can’t! We can’t break up! We’ve tried. It doesn’t work! Please Draco!” I beg, my eyes tearing up.

“All this sop wearies me. You have till ten o’clock tonight to make up your minds before I tell the headmistress,” Pansy threatens, sauntering out of the room.

“What do we do?” I ask glumly.

“I don’t know,” he murmurs back, his face pinched. “It seems like every time we make progress, our relationship gets ruined.”

“That could mean two things. One; we aren’t meant to be together and if so, should end this now. Or...it could mean we aren’t trying hard enough...” I whisper.

“I know what you mean...but how can we know for sure? I could refuse Pansy’s deal...but I’d have to quit and you would most likely be expelled. I don’t want you to be expelled. I want you to stay and learn everything you can,” he murmurs, brushing his fingers against my cheek.

“But if you accept...what then? You keep up the pretences of dating Pansy? What about me? Will you then pretend I do not exist?” I ask softly.

“I could quit,” Draco murmurs, his face suddenly becoming animated. “That’s it! I’ll resign. Then Pansy has nothing over you!”

“Or...I could transfer to a different school?” I suggest. “Like the Baubaxton Academy?”

“No. You should stay here. You have friends here. I’ll just quit. Teaching isn’t a passion of mine anyway. I could teach at Durmstrang in the mean time, if I really want to,” Draco interjects.

“So, if you quit...when do we see each other?” I ask uncertainly.

“I don’t know...Deid...maybe we should put this off till you finish school?” Draco suggests softly.

“I know,” I mumble back. That would be the smart thing to do. But I don’t feel like being smart! I want to do what I like...

“I love you,” he offers, kissing me lightly.

“And I love you,” I whisper against his lips.

Draco stands up and leaves the room, leaving me sitting on the floor. I feel lost and angry and disappointed. But I know we’re doing what’s right. Draco is an adult and I’m still just a little school kid. It’s stupid of me to have thought that we could make it work.
