Tonight they were calling for freezing temperatures. Fall was losing the battle as winter raged its way into the city. November was still a week away, but the temperature felt like December. Winter was going to be long, and cold.
Mika dressed in a black, fitted thermal top and black fitted, fleece lined leggings. She could wear too many layers, it would hinder her movements, so she made the most out of what she could wear. Her hands laced up her black boots securely. Her hair was braided back into a single Dutch braid, something simple to keep it out of her way. Grabbing her coat, and the phone Hawks had given her, she made her way to their rendezvous point.
__________
Hawks wasn't dressed in his usual attire. Tonight he dawned all black to blend in with their surroundings. Black looked good on him, well, really anything did if we're being honest.Mika was surprised, he was early for once. Maybe he's anxious to get this over with, she thought as she zipped up the jacket, "Since when do you get somewhere early?"
He chuckled, "You said not to be late."
"Hawks actually listening for once? Have I ascended to another timeline," she smiled.
"Yeah, yeah, don't rub it in," he smiled. Her liked the way her usually cold eyes lit up when she smiled.
"Are you ready?" She looked him over, "It's going to be a long night."
"I'll buy you a coffee when we're done," he turned and began walking. Mika followed behind him. "Oh," he began, "We gotta go up." He pointed to the sky.
She blinked, "Why?"
"We'll get there faster," he opened his arms, "Come on."
Mika let out a long breath, "Hawks...." She walked over to him, "I don't like this idea."
He laughed as she wrapped her arms around him, "Relax. It'll be quick."
She hated heights. HATED them. He positioned her arms around his neck and securely wrapped his around her waist before stretching his large wings. She felt them take off and gripped his jacket collar, burying her face in his neck as the cold air hit against them.
"I'm not going to drop you, you know," his voice was in her ear, soft and warm. Mika didn't say anything, merely clinging to this idiot, waiting for it to be over. He grinned as he made his way to their first target. It was cute, something he hadn't expected. She seemed so fearless, being so nervous about something like this, amused him.
He landed the softly on top of a building and paused before letting her go, "You okay?"
"Y-yeah," she slowly released him and looked around them, "Hitomi first?"
He watched her and nodded, "He's the closest."
Truth be told this was almost too easy. They made fast work, with it being the dead of night and so cold, there weren't very many guards present. Mika had kept her promise and didn't kill the boss, just...severely maimed him. Hawks pulled out his phone and texted the number he was given.
"Smart," Mika wrapped the palm of her hand, "Incase they're listening to the scanners."
Hawks smirked and tapped his temple, "I use this thing sometimes." He put his phone away and stretched his arms, "When we see the lights we'll split."
She nodded and stretched her legs. They felt stiff from not taking a big job in a while. She would be sore tomorrow, making a mental note to hydrate. "Did you go to UA," she looked at him.
He blinked, caught off guard by her making conversation, "No. I was...I guess you could say homeschooled."
"Bullshit," her eyes met his, "You'll have to do better than that."
He looked away and sighed with a smile, "I'll tell you over that coffee. They're almost here." His golden eyes zeroed in on the approaching cruisers and he opened his arms, "Let's get."
Mika groaned and walked up to him, "If I catch a cold..."
He laughed and removed his headphones, placing them on her ears, "This one will take a second. I can fly full speed or it'll bust your eardrums."
She gripped him once again as they lifted off. She was thankful for the headphones, her ears were protected from the biting cold. She drilled buried her face in his neck, refusing to even attempt to open her eyes. Mika why do you do this shit, she scolded as the wind moved past them.
Hawks held her securely against him, keeping his eyes on their destination through his yellow goggles. He tried not to think about it, but she felt cozy in his arms. Keep your head in the game, he corrected his train of thought as they neared their destination.
He placed them down a few blocks away, in a blacked out alleyway. He lifted the headphones from her ears and placed them around his neck. Her grey eyes slowly opened and she released his collar. They stayed close for a moment, listening for movement before they set to work once more.
Mika leaned around a building, looking for guards. Hawks tapped her shoulder and motioned for her to move back. He plucked a few small feathers from his wings and sent them out into the darkness. He stared at the ground, feeling their movements.
Mika was intrigued. She wasn't aware of how exactly he was able to do this, but it being Hawks, of course it wouldn't make sense. His eyes closed for a moment before he quickly pulled her against him in the darkened alley. Two armed guards casually passed, talking amongst themselves. He leaned down into her ear, "Three hundred feet to the left. Be careful."
Mika nodded quietly and released her grip on his arms, walking into the darkness. Hawks leaned back and closed his eyes, using a feather to keep an eye on her.
She carefully made her way into the darkened house. She noticed the feather and smirked, "What, you keeping tabs now?"
Hawks chuckled and stepped out in front of the returning guards, "I seem to have lost my way."
