"could you slow down!" i yelled across the empty hallways, but my request was unsuccessful as the boy simply ignored me. i followed after him in silence for a few more moments before he came to an unexpected halt outside a classroom."this is your tutor." he said, and my eyes widened at his tone of voice. i had only ever heard him shouting, but now he sounded different. his voice sounded tired and fed up with life, and bloody hell i could relate. his tone was deep and husky, i couldn't help but wish i sounded like that.
"whats a tutor?" i said, dumbly, and i mentally facepalmed in embarrassment.
"you don't know what tutor is?" the lad looked at me like i was an alien, "have you never been to school before?"
"well-" i coughed, "i've been to primary school but after that i was homeschooled. we didn't have tutor in primary." i tried to explain, and he seemed to kind of understand."okay— whatever. tutor is the room you go to as soon as you come to school every morning and you're here for 15 minutes before your first lesson starts." he explained in a bored-manner. "anyway, come on." and then he stalked off down the hallways again.
i jogged off after him, and eventually caught up so we were then walking side by side. my eyes glanced all around the walls and lockers, i had never been to a high school before. this looked quite cool, i won't lie. all the lockers, all the rooms, i had never felt so independent.
"this here," he stopped outside yet another classroom, "is your english room. you have mr barsphile, goodluck with that." a small smirk appeared on his lips as he said that, but it was gone as soon as it formed. i rolled my eyes, knowing i was going to make my own opinions on people after i had met them, and not believe what this random lad was saying.
the tour went on for another ten minutes before lionel stopped me in the middle of another hallway. "okay, i'm bored of being your tourguide. anything else you want to know you can ask your friends — if you make any." and after the words left his mouth, he swiftly turned on his heel and walked down the hallway again.
and now, not even an hour into my first day i was alone and lost. surely he didn't expect me to remember all of that, right? fuck, what do i do now?
i started walking in a randomly chosen direction and knocked on the door to the closest classroom i could find. everyone in the room was silent, so when i knocked it echoed throughout the spacious room.
"who is it?" a feminine voice shouted calmly, and i then pushed the door open to reveal myself. the door was at the back of the classroom, and not a single student turned around to see who it was, surprisingly."hi— i'm new." i said, but quickly added on, "and i'm lost."
"oh! i see, whats your name darling?" she spoke, her purple lipstick catching my attention.
"hunter." i said quickly, wanting this to be over with.
"well, hunter, can i see your timetable?"
"yeah, its right here." i said, but then when i started fishing my pockets for it, i realised i no longer had it.of course, when that idiot snatched it from me in the principals office, he never gave it back.
"oh, i don't have it." i said dumbly, and her eyebrows furrowed at me. i watched as she brushed a thick section of her blonde hair out of her face as she scowled at me, "not a very good first impression is it?"
"i'm sorry." i shrugged, not knowing what more i could do.
"well, i suppose i'll have to call the office and request they print you out a new one, ay?" she said, and i didn't know if that was rhetorical or not. i played it safe and just silently nodded at her, and then watched as she sat back down at her desk at the front of the room and dialed on an old landline."hello! i have a new student here, he claims to be called hunter?" she said, and then was silent for a few moments. "yes, mhm." another anxious pause... "he doesn't seem to have his timetable anymore, yes very irresponsible i know!" i cringed at her know-it-all tone, not needing to deal with this right now... "okay, perfect." she said at last, and then put the phone down calmly.
"the office are printing out a new timetable for you as we speak, go over there and collect it now." she said, and then turned back down to her desk.
god, i hate my life, "um- sorry where is the office?" my voice was quiet and honestly quite embarrassing, and i knew the teacher could sense my awkwardness.she looked up at me once again and clicked her tongue. shaking her head, she sighed and scanned her eyes across the classroom of students, all of which seemed to be writing down in their books.
"marianna." she said loudly, and i noticed a black haired girl perk her head up instantly. "would you mind taking hunter to the office?" she asked her kindly, and marianne nodded her head politely, but didn't speak.
i watched as the dark haired girl stood up from her seat and started walking towards me. only now did we get a proper glance at each other, and i noticed she was quite a pretty girl. with her bright blue eyes and her freckled button nose, she looked beautiful.
as she walked towards me, she nodded her head to the door and i then walked out of it with her following close behind. after she slowly closed it behind us, she finally spoke.
"hi, i'm marianna, but you can just call me mari." she introduced herself with a gentle smile, and i immediately returned it.
"i'm hunter." i nodded, and then we started walking down the hallway.
"sorry about that lesson seeming so dead, its just because its miss munfords lesson, nobody dares to speak unless spoken too."
"why?" i asked.
"maybe because she's the scariest teacher in the school." mari sarcastically responded, and my cheeks went pink at her eyes looking directly into mine.
"oh.""anyway, so where did you move here from?" she asked, and i knew she expected me to say the name of a school, but i didn't have one.
"um- i was actually homeschooled before this." i said, combing some of my light brown hair out of my eyes with my fingers.
"oh! that's cool," she nodded to me "why were you homeschooled?"
"well i had an incident in primary school and my dad decided i just shouldn't go to school again after it, but i eventually convinced him that i needed to go to high school like every other kid." i shrugged, and for some reason mari looked quite interested in what i was saying. that was a nice change.i knew i was a bit late to the whole 'high school experience, since i was currently in my junior year, but better late than never. after what happened in primary school, a part of me expected to never step into school again. but here i was.
"oh! i see, fair enough." she smiled. and then we stopped outside a familiar room, "this is the office."
"yeah, thanks." i returned her smile once again, and then put my hand on the doorknob before she spoke again.
"want me to wait?" she asked.
"if you wouldn't mind." the response left my lips before i could even register what i was saying. whatever, i guess she's staying now.i entered the office room, and walked up to the desk where the familiar office lady was sitting.
"hello again!" she said when her blue eyes met my light brown ones.
"hi, i'm just here for my schedule." i said, and the lady nodded wordlessly while searching through piles of paperwork. moments later, she pulled out the correct piece of paper for me and handed it over.
"try not to lose this one, ay?" she laughed sweetly, and i joined in even though it wasn't necessarily funny.when i exited the room, sure enough marianna was waiting outside for me. she smiled when she saw me walking to her again, "hi!"
"hey, i got my schedule." i said, and then handed it to her once she asked.
"so, first period..." she mumbled to herself while her eyes scanned over the sheet. "you have mr barsphile, unlucky." and then i actually started to get worried, since that is the exact thing lionel said to me about him."oh... where's his room?" i asked, and marianna then led me down the hallways, and as she put it, 'to my doom'.
