i was, of course, winning the first game of bowling to my dad. he was still putting up a good fight, but when i had over seventy points and he was still on sixty-four, i hardly see how he can even win.
regretfully, i have unfortunately been checking my phone frequently throughout this little outing. but yet, i hadn't received a single text from my almost-boyfriend. for fucks sake, i thought he actually liked me! but if he liked me, why hasn't he tried to contact me? maybe i'll see him in school on monday...
"want me to buy some more drinks?" my dad offered, smiling down at me.
"sure, can i have a slushie this time?" i responded.
the older man laughed before nodding, "you're such a kid." and then he walked off towards the bar.
i turned back to my phone; checking my notifications. fuck this shit. i clicked onto his contact and called the number of lionel. the phone call rung, and i lifted the mobile to my ear.
"pick up... please." i mumbled to myself, the call tone echoing anxiously. after five rings, the phone call ended. i took the phone away from my ear and stared at the screen. why didn't he answer?
accepting defeat, i shoved my phone back into my pocket and turned to look at the bar where my dad was now approaching me from.
"you alright?" he said after handing me my slush.
"just... lionel." i mumbled before taking a sip from my straw, the ice instantly freezing my mouth and throat.
my dad's eyebrows furrowed, wondering if he was supposed to ask what was wrong. i guess he doesn't know if i'm comfortable with talking to him about it? after a moment of silence, he took in a deep breath, "what's he done this time?"
i laughed at his tone, almost as if he was tense. "just won't answer my calls."
"oh, why?"
"well if i knew that i wouldn't be stressing." i snapped while pinching the bridge of my nose. "shit sorry, i didn't mean to say that." i apologised quickly after. it wasn't his fault lionel was ghosting me...
"lets just play bowling and forget about him, alright?" he said after a moment of silence.
"yeah, thanks."
after we both got back home, i went straight to my room to get some sleep. after a day of stressing over lionel, playing bowling, and then stressing some now i am now exhausted.
monday morning came around smoothly and to say i was anxious for what was to come would be an understatement. i did my usual morning routine and made my way downstairs to an empty house. food was on my mind, but i knew i'd be too nervous to actually eat it.
with lionel and i on the outs, and freddie still pissed at me i didn't know who to turn too. i haven't had contact with any of the boys all weekend so who knows, freddie could've told them everything. i suppose i'd find out when i get to school.
as i approached the gates, i sought out my familiar friend group who were all standing in their usual spot. even freddie was there. so, after taking a deep breath, i started walking over there.
fiddling with my fingers, all of their eyes moved onto me one by one and i couldn't tell if they were happy or not to see me. eventually, i was in close proximity and thats when i got my answer...
"HUNTS!" cormac yelled, running into my arms and hugging me.
"hi, mate." i smiled, tightly hugging him back while squeezing my eyes shut. thank god. i let out a sigh of relief as me and cormac separated, and then i turned to the other boys. we all individually said hellos, and then i moved to freddie.
"hey freddie..."
"hunter." he nodded to me, my anxiety was rising by the minute. "if you're fine with being late to form, can we go talk? i'd say it's pretty long awaited." and as freddie spoke these words; i couldn't of felt more relieved. i was angry at freddie, a part of me still is. but i can't go on stressing about freddie, and lionel, and my friends — it's doing me no good. so that's why i agreed.
after fred and i were away from the rest of the group, he was the first to speak.
"so— firstly i wanna say i'm sorry." he stated, and my eyebrows raised. "you were right, i had known about you and lion for weeks. it wasn't fair for me to suddenly unleash all my emotions like that. i'm really sorry, hunter."
"i get it, freddie." i really didn't. "it was hard to see you being so mad at me, you're my best friend." i nodded, just wanting all this to be over with.
"and you're mine." then, with that, freddie wrapped his arms around me and pulled me into a tight embrace.
suddenly, my nerves eased into the air, and i felt okay again.
in this moment, i wasn't stressing about lionel, or cormac, or my dad. i was happy.
