luckily, i was in my last lesson of the day. not-so-luckily, it was pe. i fucking hate pe. as i walked into the changing room, my cheeks went pink at the amount of naked chests i saw staring at me. cormac wasn't in this class, as he was the one who guided me here and then disappeared off to his own lesson. so i scanned the room for maybe one of the other boys in here."hunter!" thank god, isaac was in this class too. he waved me over to his cubicle, which was being used by two other boys too. thankfully, it was a pretty big space so i had plenty of room to put my bag down.
"hey." i said, sitting on the bed knowing damn well i didn't have any pe clothes. maybe since it was my first day the teacher would let me off..?
"this is finn and archie." he introduced me to the two other lads who were currently shirtless. finn, who was a muscular tall dark skinned boy offered me an awkward smile before silently turning back around to put his gym tshirt on. i noticed he had black hair that was styled into dreads, that also had some little silver clips on. he had an eyebrow slit, like mickey also did, and a gaze like stone. he clearly wasn't warm and fuzzy.
"i'm archie, archie cooper." the other boy introduced himself while offering me a high five. i, of course, slapped his hand jokily and took notice of his dark blue hair.
"i like the colour." i said, pointing up to his hair, and i watched as his cheeks reddened at my compliment.
"oh, thank you!" he shyly giggled at me, smiling like a kid in a candy store.eventually, all three of them were dressed and i followed them out the room where the gym was. when we entered, the pe teacher, who was a tall ginger man, noticed my unfamiliar presence and pointed me over to him.
splitting up from the group was a bit of an anxious move to make but i didn't bother objecting. i strolled over to the teacher and he immediately knew who i was. "you're huntley, right?" his accent was strongly american, and he sounded as if he was from down south which made me suppress a chuckle. i loved hearing different accents.
"just hunter, is fine." i nodded to him, and he returned the gesture."well, since it's your first day, i'll let you off for not having your gym clothes but make sure to bring them on wednesday which is your next pe lesson."
"got it." i responded, silently grateful this teacher was being so chill with me and not making me feel out of place. "what shall i do?"
"just sit here," he pointed to a bench behind him "and observe as the other lads play a game of volleyball as that's our topic for the next few weeks." he finished and then stalked off to go join the other boys.i was quite happy to just observe since, as i said before, i fucking hate pe. it's not even that i dislike exercising, it's kinda enjoyable i guess, i just don't like how the other people watch as i do it. i find it weird how i'm graded on if i can run a certain amount of kilometres.
after taking the seat given to me, i then looked out for isaac and decided i'd just watch him for the lesson. he didn't seem to speak alot to the other boys during the game. i could tell he was focused on playing volleyball, and bloody hell he was good.
fifty minutes later, the lesson was finally over and all the boys started making their way to the changing rooms. i merged in with the crowed and settled on the bench in the cubicle again as the four of us fell into casual conversation.
i kept my eyes glued to the floor for the most part, as i didn't want any of the boys to catch me awkwardly glancing at them getting changed. that'd be embarrassing.
"oh and guess what," isaac said, making all three of us ask what. "mickey and lion are having a fight today after school again. who's coming to watch?" all the boys seemed to laugh at what isaac said, so i just joined in even though i didn't see how a fight was funny.
"you said again?" i asked, and isaac stopped laughing to grin at me momentarily.
"yeah, them two are always at each others throats." he said, almost as if i was supposed to know that. but how could i know?
"and who the hell is lion?" i asked again, and suddenly felt kinda dumb for all the questions."no way did this guy just ask who lion is." finn spoke up, giving me a funny look in the process. i gulped, looking away from his death gaze. i was starting to think this guy didn't like me too much...
"oh lay off, it's his first day." isaac said with a roll of his eyes at finn. i gave isaac a look of thankfulness at him standing up for me, and he just smiled back at me. "lion is lionel wilson. do you know him?"
"oh! yeah, i met him this morning." i said casually, and all three boys' eyes widened at me.
"how could you say that so chill-ly?" archie said, pulling me up from the bench and shaking my shoulders. i laughed at all of them reacting crazily to this news, "what's so strange about that?""what did he say? did he hurt you?" isaac asked and i could tell he was eager for some gossip.
"no? why the bloody hell would he hurt me?" i asked, "he was in the office when i was asking for my timetable and the principal asked him to give me a tour, so he did, kinda. that's it."
"he gave you a tour? and he didn't... he didn't punch you?" archie looked at me like i was some sort of unknown species, it made me feel kinda singled out. was there something i didn't know about this lionel guy?"what archie is trying to say, is that lionel is pretty mean to everyone except his selected group of friends. its out of character for him to be so chill with someone he isn't close too. so for him to give you a tour without any confrontation, it's just weird that's all." isaac explained, seemingly calmer now, and i nodded to the information i just got about lionel.
it was weird being told this, because now i too was left wondering why lionel didn't start anything with me. hmm, strange i guess.
"so, why do mickey and him always fight?" i asked.
"they are both pretty alpha-male kinda guys so they collide quite a lot." archie shrugs at me and i nodded in understanding. i did kinda take mickey for a dominant and controlling guy when we first met so this didn't surprise me too much."mickeys nice though." issac quickly added. he obviously didn't want me to get the wrong impression on his mate, which was kinda cute.
"no no, i know don't worry. he seems alright, i think he just needs to get to know me a bit." i smiled to him.while me and isaac were walking towards the gates of the school, he turned to ask me "so are you coming to watch the fight then?" and i wondered for a minute. i really wouldn't find this entertaining in the slightest, but if all my new friends were going to be there i should probably make a bit of an effort to join in...
so that's why i responded with, "yeah, okay."isaac and i stopped outside the gates, and he informed me we were just waiting for the rest of our friends to come so we could all walk to the place of the fight together, including mickey.
but i knew i had something to do first. "yo, give me a minute i just need to call my dad and tell him i won't be home till later." and isaac nodded to me.
i turned around from him so i could get some privacy and dialled dad's number. instantly, he picked up.
"huntley! how was your first day, son? did you do okay? was there any incidents?" and as expected, he bombarded me with questions.
"no dad, it was really good i promise. i made some friends too, and i'm actually going out for food with them now. is that alright?"
"yes, of course! if you need a lift home afterwards give me a call okay?" i could tell by his voice he was excited i had friends, finally. it made me smile, since i knew i had made him proud.
"i will do, dad. bye." and with that, i hung up.when i turned back around, all of the group were here now and they were talking about the fight.
"so mick, you won last time so if you win again you'll be on a streak!" cormac said to his friend, patting him encouragingly on the back. i raised my eyebrows at that, for some reason i expected lionel to beat him. i don't know why, something about the guy seemed scary. maybe its the fact literally everyone calls him lion."when." he stated coldly. "you mean when i win." mickey said, grinning manically at all of us. i returned the gesture, showing him my support and he seemed satisfied with that.
"now come on, let's get you to this fight!" freddie said, raising his fist in the air enthusiastically. and with that, we all started walking up the street. i had no idea where we were going, all i knew was that i was glad i finally had some friends.
