Max was looking in the fridge for something to eat and Anika was eating some berries as a snack, while I was texting my gran that everything was ok so she didn't get suspicious. Though when I looked up, I saw Max pull out a bunch of carrots.
"We're all out of food." Max told as Daniel walked in and gave a confused look.
"What do you mean we're out of food? We still have sprouts and there are some berries left." Daniel told before Anika dropped the rest of the berries in her mouth and then processed what he had said and gave a look.
"Not anymore." He told, making Daniel think.
"But we still have celery and broccoli." He told showing them and I was confused how he got them.
"I could stop by my place and look at my grans cook book. She makes the best chicken and celery soup, family recipe." I informed the others.
"If I were a rabbit, I'd be happy. And we also don't have chicken for that Sav." Max informed me.
"I'm hungry." Anika whined.
"I'll go shopping." Max offered.
"No!" Daniel told in a panic, before realising they did need food to survive. "Um... what will you get?"
"You know, just healthy things." He told Daniel, making me and Anika share a look knowing what Max would really get.
"Like what?"
"Trust me. Only very healthy stuff." He told Daniel before clicking his tongue and me and Anika went to join Max on the shopping trip.As we were going through the aisles in the shops and Max and Anika were grabbing things that were more snack related while I focused on getting stuff for dinner.
"I'm telling you, we don't need 20 bags of chips."
"We both know Alfie is gonna eat at least five before we get back home." Another voice spoke.
"I will smack him if he does. Just put 15 back, please." She told him.
"Trouble in paradise. I hope you and Max don't have that when you two start dating." Anika told us, which confused me.
"What?"
"Just ignore it." Max told me before we rounded the corner to run into some people I knew.
"Eve?" I asked making her look towards us.
"Oh, hey, Savanna. What you doing here?"
"Helping the Hunter family with some grocery shopping. What about you?"
"Me, Jerome and Alfie are holding a dinner for some of our housemates from our high school."
"That's nice of you guys."
"Yeah, we haven't had a lot of chances to catch up with one another."
"Oh that reminds me. This is Anika and Max, two of the Hunter kids." I introduced.
"I'm Evelyn Lavender-Carter. It's a pleasure to meet you two." She told before we heard a noise.
"Evie! We found the cheese you and Fabian like." Jerome told as him and Alfie held onto one another.
"Yes!" She told in excitement before the two rushed over with said cheese and a bunch off soft drink. "Oh, this is my partner Jerome and our best friend Alfie."
"Hey." The four told one another.
"Nice hair Jerome." I told making him smile.
"Thank you. Evie likes the shagginess."
"It's true I do."
"We should let you guys get back to your food buying." Max told before seeing some chips he had to grab and showed us.
"We don't need another bag." I told him.
"This is my favourite kind."
"We don't need it." I repeated.
"What if I switch it for a different one?" He asked making me sigh and I couldn't help but smile.
"Fine."
"Yes!"
"Boys, am I right?" Eve spoke making me nod.
"Bottomless pits." I added before I remembered. "I've got another 5 months added to my banned."
"Oh nice. We got six cause someone just had to play hide-n-seek."
"That was awesome and you know it." The boys told making her shake her head.
"Well anyway, we can give you guys a lift since it would be a bit difficult to carry all this back to your place."
"You sure we won't be a bother?" Anika asked.
"Not at all. Besides, mum would kill me if she found out I didn't help. Dad would stop her from hurting Jerome."
"Her father loves me."
"Wanna see a photo of him?" I asked the two making them nod and give a shrug.
"This is from last week when we had lunch and Dad picked Jerome up again." Eve informed us as she pulled the photo up on her phone and then showed us, allowing Anika and Max to see what her father was.
"He's huge!"
"Are you adopted?" Max asked her, causing Jerome and Alfie to laugh.
"Every time." Eve muttered confusing Anika and Max.
"Whenever any of her housemates met her father they always asked if she was adopted." I explained.
"I'll never escape it. Welp, let's make sure we've got everything so we can head off." She told making Jerome take control of their trolley and lead us through the shop.
'Well this was a strange run in.'When we returned, Max turned one of the bags upside down and poured out all the chips they had gotten.
"Do you think we got enough healthy stuff?" Anika asked as she ate some chocolate and both me and Max had a lollipop, while I was also putting all the cold stuff away and wrote down the soup recipe for Daniel to follow.
"Totally." He told before picking up one of the bags to look at the nutrients section. "These chips. They're loaded with... okay, maybe not the best example, but, um..."
As he looked around at all the other stuff, and then pulled his lollipop out of his mouth to show Anika.
"Lollipops, they've got real... fruit flavour. That's good, right?"
"Actually it's made by using natural fruit or artificial flavouring that mimics the taste of various fruits. They are typically created by extracting the essential oils and compounds from the fruits, and by blending the two with other ingredients, they are able to have a consistent taste. There's a few other things, but anything more is usually a closely guarded secret of candy makers." I explained before seeing the awe look Max had on his face.
'Did I say too much?'
"Wow you are smart." He told making me smile.
"Why thank you."
"And smart girls are my kryponite."
"Really now? Cause they scare you?"
"No, cause it's hot." He admitted making me blush and he realised what he said. "Well, you know-- Uh, just.... Never mind."
The two of us looked away from each other and saw the sad look Anika had, making us worry over her.
"You okay?" Max asked.
"Just reminded me of Kate. She always makes us juices for breakfast with real fruit and everything." She admitted to us before becoming slightly serious. "Where are they, Max?"
"I wish I knew, Nika." He admitted before moving to stand before her to comfort his new sister. "It's gonna be all right, Spunky. They'll be back, I promise."
The two moved to hug, forgetting for a split second that there was a bag of food between them.
"I hope we didn't break the eggs." She admitted making him pull back.
"We brought eggs?" He asked the two, making them both nod. "Gross."
"I love eggs." I admitted as Anika chuckled in amusement at Max being weird.
