Mevkhibe was spending her afternoon getting her nails done at Melihat's salon. As one of the girls, Muge, files her nails, she winces and pulls her sensitive fingers away. "Just tear it off already why don't you?" she clicks her tongue and waves her hand.
Leyla was leaned at the basin, having her hair washed and she stared at the examples on the wall as Melihat washes. "Maybe I should change to black?" Mevkhibe freezes in her chair. "Yes, I should just go all black, what do you think aunt Melalihat?" Melihat sighs. "Or maybe gold? It looks just as good."
Mevkhibe turns and stares at her daughter. Then she looks at Melihat. "Maybe I should go gold too."
Melihat gapes at her and Mevkhibe blinks her eyes as if to say not really.
"Let's make half black and half golden orange. Yes! It'll look like a flame!" Leyla nods as much as she can with head bent back. She looks at Melihat. "Yes?"
"Why not," Melihat shrugs, winking at Mevkhibe. "Alright, get up, we're done." Leyla sits up and Melihat wraps her hair in a towel. Leyla sees her mother looking and Mevkhibe turns back around.
"I think I'm going to cut my hair too," Leyla looks at herself in front of the mirror.
"What?"
"Do everything aunt Melihat. Cut, color, everything."
Mevkhibe groans, wrinkling her nose. Leyla had the most beautiful head of long silky hair, why would she do that? Muge is smiling at Leyla explaining to Melihat what she wants, claiming shorter hair would be easier for her to manage.
"We're not cutting your hair Leyla," Melihat says, pursing her lips. Her hands go to her hips.
"Why?"
"Because you're depressed," Melihat informs her knowingly, shrugging.
"Depressed? Me?"
"No me," Melihat replies dryly. "Yes you! Do you know what people do when they're depressed? Hm? They make drastic changes like cutting off all their hair or dyeing it a darker color. Then another and another. You're going to go home and decide you don't like it anymore and cry about what a mess your hair is and then I have to fix it again in the morning." Melihat shakes her head. "Forgive me my dear but I refuse to do anything other than a few snips and a blow dry."
"Aunt Melihat," Leyla blinks at her, "that's complete and utter nonsense! I am not depressed! I am fine! I have it all under control! My life is great!" Leyla pushes the towel back up that has started to slip, huffing. "If you won't do what I want then I'll leave." Leyla walks straight out of the door and next door to go home. "And yes, I'm keeping your towel!"
Mevkhibe follows her as she runs out, having come back to get the keys. "Leyla! Leyla wait!"
"And it's always the hairdresser's fault!" Melihat calls after Leyla, who glares at her before she walks in and shuts the door.
"Why are you yelling at my daughter?"
"Why not? I'm the victim here. Me!"
"What's going on here?" Ayhan and Muzaffer chose that moment to arrive and they witnessed Leyla stomping down the street and Melihat yelling.
"Just forget about it," Melihat waves a hand, rolling her eyes.
Ayhan shrugs and then clears her throat. "If you have time, aunt Melihat, Muzo and I would like to come in for a manicure tomorrow." Muzaffer nods, a big smile on his face.
"Muzo?"
"Yes aunt Melihat, me. Why do you sound surprised that I want to get a manicure? Men are just as well groomed as women these days you know."
