The 1981 Armenia mid air collision occurred on the 18th of July 1981 when a Soviet Air Defence Forces Sukhoi SU-15, named "Flagon", crashed into the tail of a Transporte Aéreo Rioplatense Canadair CL-44, registered as Lima Victor- Juliet Tango November (LV-JTN), commercial transport which had strayed into Soviet airspace over the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic, the three crew and one passenger on the CL-44 aircraft died; the Soviet pilot i the fighter jet was able to eject from his aircraft safety.

The CL-44 was on a flight from Iman Khomeini International Airport (IATA: IKA, ICAO: OLLE), Tehran, Iran to Larnaca International Airport (IATA: LCA, ICAO: LCLK), Larnaca, Cyprus, when the aircraft was on the return leg back to Iran it strayed off course, afterwards it was heading to the Turkish border, it strayed into soviet airspace over the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic, which led the Soviets to scramble an Air Defence Forces Sukhoi SU-15 to intercept the aircraft.

According to Soviet reports, the crew of the CL-44 failed to respond to radio calls and visual signals from the pilot of the Fighter Jet.

The crew of the CL-44 attempted to get away from the area, and the Soviet pilot directed his aircraft into the tail of the escaping aircraft, this caused both of the aircraft to crash near Yerevan in the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic.
