The 1983 TAME Boeing 737 crash is the deadliest aviation accident in Ecuador, in which a Boeing 737-212 Advanced, registered as Hotel Charlie- Bravo India Golf (HC-BIG), which was flying a domestic route on the 11th of July 1983 from the now closed Mariscal Sucre International Airport (IATA: UIO, ICAO: SEQU), Quito, Ecuador to Mariscal Lamar Airport (IATA: CUE, ICAO: SECU), Cuenca, Ecuador, the plane crashed into a hill during the final approach to Mariscal Airport just 1.6 kilometres from the airport, the crash killed all 119 people on board the airplane.
During the final few minutes of the flight, the pilots were discussing labor problems in TAME and they didn't know that the plane was flying dangerously low towards a mountain, also at the same time, the flight crew were experimenting with some of the aircraft's controls and systems.
Seconds before the plane hit the mountain and 1.6 kilometres away from their destination airport, the GPWS activated, the Captain and the First Officer attempted to climb the plane to clear the mountain by applying full power to the engines and making a steep climb, but it was to late, the plane scraped the peak of Bashún Hill (which overlooks the runway at Marsical Lamar Airport), the plane exploded and slid down a ravine, there were no survivors.
The summary of the crash was Controlled Flight into Terrain due to Pilot error.
