Eastern Airlines Flight 980, registered as November 819 Echo Alpha (N819EA), was a scheduled international passenger flight from President Stroessner International Airport (IATA: ASU, ICAO: SGAS), Asunción, Paraguay to Miami International Airport (IATA: MIA, ICAO: KMIA), Miami, Florida, United States.
On the 1st of January 1985, while the plane was descending towards El Alto International Airport (IATA: LPB, ICAO: SLLP), La Paz, Bolivia, which was a scheduled stopover, the Boeing 727 that was operating this flight struck Mount Illimani at an altitude of 19,600 feet, the crash killed all 29 people on board the plane.
The wreckage was scattered over a large area of a glacier covered with snow, over the decades, several search expeditions were only able to recover a small amount of debris and the searches for the flight recorders were unsuccessful, the accident remains the highest altitude Controlled Flight into Terrain in commercial aviation history.
At 19:37pm local time, the pilot of flight 980 told ATC at El Alto International Airport in La Paz, Bolivia, that the estimated a landing at 19:47pm local time , the crew was cleared to descend from 25,000 feet to 18,000 feet, at some point after this exchange, the aircraft veered significantly off course, fo unknown reasons, possibly to avoid weather, the accident occurred 25 miles (40 kilometres) from Runway 9R at El Alto International Airport.
