On the 23rd if August 2000 at 19:30pm Arabia Standard Time (AST +3 of UTC), the Airbus A320, serving this route and flight, crashed minutes after executing a go around upon a failed attempt to land on Runway 12, the flight crew suffered from spatial disorientation during the go around and the plane crashed into the shallow waters of the Persian Gulf, 5 kilometres from the airport is where the plane crashed and all 143 people on board the aircraft were killed in the crash, which remains the deadliest aviation accident in Bahraini territory and at the time it was the deadliest accident to involve an Airbus A320 until it was surpassed by TAM Airlines Flight 3054, which has 199 fatalities in that crash, which occurred on the 17th of July 2007.
While the plane was carrying out a turning climb, the aircraft entered a descent at 15 degrees nose down, the Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS) activated, first sounding a "sink rate" alarm and then it sounded nine "whoop whoop pull up" alarms, which continued to sound in the cockpit until the plane impacted the water, the flight crew did not respond to the repeated GPWS warnings and approximately one minute after the crew started the go around, the aircraft disappeared from radar screens and at 19:30:02pm AST the aircraft crashed into the ocean, the plane broke up into pieces and all on board the plane were killed in the crash.
The summary of the crash was a Somatogravic illusion which led to pilot error and a loss of situational awareness; Controlled Flight into Water (CFIW).
