On the 15th of April 2008, Hewa Bora Airways Flight 122, registered as 9 Quebec- Charlie Hotel November (9Q-CHN), it was a McDonnell Douglas DC-9-51 aircraft that crashed into a residential and market area of Goma of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the crash happened immediately south of Goma International Airport (IATA: GOM, ICAO: FZNA), out of the 94 people who were on the plane, 3 were killed and the other 91 people survived the crash.

The plane was departing Goma and it was bound for N'djili International Airport (IATA: FIH, ICAO: FZAA), Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, it had a stopover at Kisangani Bangoka International Airport (IATA: FKI, ICAO: FZIC), Kisangani, Democratic Republic of the Congo, the plane was doing the Goma to Kisangani leg first when it crashed, the number one engine (The left engine) caught fire after 980 feet, the fire developed into an uncontrolled engine failure the aircraft overran the runway at 14:30pm local time (12:30pm UTC), the plane impacted concrete homes, shops and market stalls, the crash site was located at the Birere Market on I'Avenue du. 20 Mai, just south of the end of Runway 18, 37 people were killed on the ground when the plane crashed and 71 people were injured, the total death toll is 40, 40 people were killed in the crash, 3 people on board the plane and 37 people on the ground.
