WARNINGS OF A PLANE CRASH
Pictured above is the accident aircraft.
Birgenair Flight 301, registered as Tango Charlie- Golf Echo November (TC-GEN), was an international passenger charter flight which was chartered by the Turkish managed Birginair partner Alas Vacional, it was a chartered flight from Gregorio Luperón International Airport (IATA: POP, ICAO: MDPP), Dominican Republic to Frankfurt Airport (IATA: FRA, ICAO: EDDF), Germany with scheduled stopovers at Gander International Airport (IATA: YQX, ICAO: CYQX), Gander, Newfoundland, Canada and a final stopover at Berlin Airport (IATA: BER, ICAO: ETBS), Berlin, Germany.
On the 6th of February 1996, the Boeing 757-200 operating this route crashed shortly after takeoff from Puerto Plata's Gregorio Luperón International Airport, all 189 people on board the plane were killed in the crash which makes it the deadliest aviation accident to have ever occurred in the Dominican Republic.
The crew became confused because the Captain's ASI (Airspeed Indicator) showed that the plane was flying over 560 kilometres per hour and it was increasing while the First Officer's ASI, which was correct, was showing 410 kilometres per hour and decreasing, the Captain assumed both ASI were wrong and he checked the circuit breakers, when they were checked the over speed warning appeared, the Captain's ASI was showing a near speed of 650 kilometres per hour, as the plane climbed the ASI on the Captain's side read 650 kilometres per hour, the autopilot was getting it's information from the Captain's ASI, so the autopilot increased the pitch up attitude and it reduced power to reduce the airspeed, the First Officer's ASI was showing 370 kilometres per hour and speed was descending, the Captain decided to reduce thrust which triggered the stick shaker, as the plane was close to a stall, it's path became unstable, 20 seconds before the plane crashed, the Captain attempted to recover from the stall by increasing thrust to full power but since the nose of the aircraft was in the pitch up attitude, this caused the left engine to flame out causing the right engine which was at full power too, since the left flamed out and the right engine was still active the plane entered a spin, then moments later the plane inverted, at 23:47 AST (Atlantic Standard Time), the GPWS sounded and then eight seconds later the plane impacted the surface of the Atlantic Ocean.
The summary of the crash was Stalled and crashed into the sea due to flight instrument malfunction from a pitot tube blockage.
