Balkan Bulgarian Airlines Flight 107 was an accident that occurred on the 16th of March 1978, when a Balkan Bulgarian Airlines Tupolev Tu-134, registered as Lima Zulu- Tango Uniform Bravo (LZ-TUB), the flight was on an international passenger flight from Sofia Airport (IATA: SOF, ICAO: LBSF), Sofia, Bulgaria to Warsaw Chopin Airport (IATA: WAW, ICAO: EPWA), Warsaw, Poland, when the plane crashed after taking off from Sofia Airport, all 73 passengers and crew onboard the plane were killed in the crash, as of 2023 the crash remains the worst accident in Bulgarian aviation history, the exact cause of the crash remains unknown.
On departure from Sofia Airport, the aircraft began to climb to 29,040 feet but at 16,100 feet the pane turned on a heading of 050 degrees, the plane then turned again to a heading of 270 degrees, the plane was now heading west and then the plane began an abnormal descent.
The aircraft crashed 10 minutes after takeoff, the plane crashed near the village of Gabare, which is close to Byalaslatina, which is 130 kilometres northeast of Sofia, the crash killed all 73 people on board the plane, at the time of the crash the plane was flying at a speed of 800 kilometres per hour with almost full fuel tanks, which were containing 11 tons of jet fuel, the nature of the emergency and whether the aircraft was under control by the flight crew at the moment of impact with the ground was never established.
