CARTER POV
I have a thought.
At this moment some average Joe would be scared, locked in a jail cell, and starred down by a few meaty boys like prey. Their ragged stares may be intimidating, but I can be intimidated too.
This is not my first rodeo here, being arrested is like second nature by now.
If you remember, Sarh and I have been causing havoc for two years, and some of the time I would be arrested afterward. Either on purpose or on accident, we would be able to get out with no problem.
The demon would help us, be on our side. However, I have a feeling the demon did this on purpose to get us to stop. That will not happen, I will not let it get the far.
Bugs, dirt, and silky spider webs cover my vision. Dark figures roam around me while I figure out an escape route. Sarah is in the house while I am running away. She needs to get out before they find her.
I bury the thought of that night away. It won't help us, I won't take the bait.
Hands take hold of me, "did you hear me, son?"
My father sits beside me on the couch in our living room. His hands are bloody, I can smell the fumes from a mile away. Dry blood crusts up on his sleeves.
Where did he come from?
Neither of the other inmates nor police officers noticed me walk up to the county cell. Their eyes are fixed on the football game on the screen in the corner of the wall.
Her sweet lips dip to mine. Kissing her eagerly, I feel the warmth spread around us as we take in each other.
That kiss was not real, her hands slowly grabbed the gun and shot me in the head. I feel nothing comes from the quick action, it was a dream I had after the night we were arrested in California.
"Alright, come with me." The officer now opens the cell and pulls me out, "bail was set and paid for."
Walking out of the precinct, I see a brown-haired girl wearing a blue sundress. Her eyes are watching my every move, racking me up and down.
Some people are horrified when their friend or loved one is arrested, mine are annoyed. The butterfly necklace dangles from her neck, she touches it briefly.
She creeps back into the car and waits for me to get in. I stop halfway to look around, no one else is there. Her face shows anger instead of annoyance, I fucked up.
"I won't ask you about what happened, Sarah told me." Belle revs her car out of the hot parking lot, "they are in Arizona."
While I was being drained from life in that small room with smelly men, they continued with the mission. Good, I was hoping they would. They called on Belle to save me, she wasted her time coming here.
Rolling down my window, "can we stop for food?"
She rolls it back up from pressing the button on her side of the car, almost chopping off my finger. The window cuts up and hits my hand, the pain is short-lived.
"We have a nine-hour drive, Carter." Her voice is soft, "we will stop once when we get closer to the girls."
I am starving, no food, no water, and no sleep for me. Laying the seat back, I turn on my side to get comfortable. There is no way I will get as much sleep as I need before the end of time. I have to at least try.
Sleep comes after, if we succeed.
When it rains, it pours. Big droplets of water crash against the car's windshield. I hear Belle cursing to herself.
