As Astra walked inside, her body faded behind the door, leaving me alone in the dark of night. The stars were the only thing aligning the sky, connecting the constellations. I sighed deeply as I threw my head back in frustration, gritting my teeth and clenching my jaw.
I was so annoyed at myself for using tone with Astra as I understood she meant no harm, it was just a question that she merely wanted answered. I suppose the idea of my parents and feeling pressured into talking about them is what sent me downward and caused me to snap at her. I could see the hurt in her eyes, followed by guilt. I could tell that she felt awful for asking such a question, which is why she fled as fast as she did without allowing me to squeeze in a quick goodnight before shutting the door. It was foolish of me to have such a reaction and ruin a great night with her— everything was going so well.
I looked at the window on her front porch, the window panes blurry and bright from the white, sheer curtains blocking the view. I could see that her silhouette was visible, along with another's who I guessed was her mothers.
I turned away from her house with my head down in shame, a feeling of defeat as I walked away from the war that I had just lost— that war being Astra. I wasn't sure how seeing her around was going to play out, that is.. if I did ever see her around. If I hadn't ever seen her around prior to this, I wouldn't see her around now, right? At least, that's what I had hoped for as seeing her in person again would be far too embarrassing for the both of us.
