— I PONDERED ON THE THOUGHT OF DAISY
What she said to me was surprising in many ways, but the most surprising part of it all, the fact that she apologised. Throughout me and Daisy's friendship, she had never really apologised to me. If she tripped me, she'd laugh. If she said something offensive and I called her out, she'd simply shrug and say "whoops!", not giving 2 shits. This was something bigger than that though, which is why her apology was shocking. If she could barely apologise for those small things, how could she apologise for something like this?— regardless, she did.
Her explanation as to why things happened and why she did what she did actually made a lot of sense. It helped me put pieces of the puzzle together that I had been missing. In a way, I was glad that she was able to own up to what she did and apologise, but just because someone apologises, doesn't mean that they have to be forgiven.
I don't think that I would ever forgive Daisy, maybe in time? but it was time that I didn't want to give up. It was her mess, not mine. She doesn't deserve my time, and she also does not deserve to be my friend.
As I strolled on over to the Curtis house, I saw Johnny walking across the street to the same exact destination. His hands were stuffed in the pockets of his jean jacket, his head down in what looked to be shame. Just as I was about to turn away, I felt a need to stay— to face the events that had played out, which meant to face Johnny and communicate. As I turned back and began to walk into his direction, his head stayed down, not noticing me or anything around him.
I then saw something coming closer behind him at an alarming rate. I then realised that it was a car, and Johnny couldn't see it because of his eyes being on the pavement.
I quickly began rushing over to him, "Johnny!" I called out to him, causing him to quickly look up. When he saw me, he smiled, but it quickly faded when I grabbed him harshly. I pulled both of us out of the way as the car was just about to hit him. We tumbled across the pavement, still in one another's arms.
It took the both of us a few seconds to realise what had happened, and when we did.. we started laughing? I suppose that it was a shock response, but even so, it felt good to laugh with him again.
"Are you okay?" Johnny asked me, catching his breathe. I nodded, not yet being able to collect my words. "Thank you.. for saving me."
"Of course.." I looked up at him. He stared at me with those eyes that I had been longing to see. Those beautiful, beady, black eyes. They were the most beautiful pair that I had ever seen, and I had thought that since day 1. We continued to stare into each other's eyes before we heard people rushing toward us.
"Are y'all okay? we heard a car outside swerve and assumed there was a car crash!" Soda rambled, standing over me and Johnny with the gang behind him.
"Yeah, I just didn't see a car coming so Ash pushed me out of the way.." He told them begrudgingly, a dry and embarrassed chuckle escaping his lips afterward as a way to cool himself with the situation.
"Woah! that's some superhero shit, nice job Ash!" Two-Bit exclaimed, hitting my arm and causing me to groan slightly in pain due to the fall and the gravel hitting my arm. "Hey Darry! looks like your title as Superman-" I heard Two-Bit continue to ramble as the gang walked off and back inside of the house, me and Johnny trailing me behind them. Just as I was about to go inside, Johnny stopped me with his arm, grabbing mine lightly.
"Astra.. can we talk?" He asked uncomfortably, shifting in his spot lightly after quickly letting go of my arm. I stood on the step above him, hesitating before I nodded my head. "Listen... I- I don't even know what to say Astra. I am so, so, so sorry for what went down. I had no idea that Daisy was going to do that and I should have pushed her off faster. I swear it wasn't what I wanted at all, and I don't even know why she did it? I barely even know her-"
"I do." I cut him off quickly. He looked at me puzzled as to what I meant. "Daisy visited me earlier today and explained everything. She told me the reason why she kissed you is because she liked you, but once you 'fell in love with me' she got jealous. She had always been jealous of me actually, which explains her occasionally bitchy behaviour."
Johnny looked at me both confused and shocked, his eyes wide and his brows furrowed. "Wait? so.. you're tellin' me that Daisy had a crush on me which is why she kissed me? even though she knew that we were together?" I nodded at his question and he suddenly had an 'aha' look.
As the air around us fell silent, me and Johnny stared into one another's eyes. I finally felt that connection again, one that I had been longing to feel. It felt as if my world was being put back together, my world being me and Johnny's relationship. I smiled at him, he smiled at me. Johnny's hand cupped my face before he began leaning in, as did I. Our lips met in a passionate kiss, one that made us feel something we couldn't even explain. A spark of electricity went through both of us, and the other could feel it. It was something different than what we were used to with one another, and I believe it was because we had both just overcame a huge obstacle in our relationship..
