The day after Catherine, Mike, and Ben broke into Mike and Ben's old middle school in SSR, Chloe, Kate, and Elizabeth talk about what they think happened.
Elizabeth Pasternak's POV
As soon as I got to school the day after it almost burned down, I ran to find Chloe and Kate.
They were sitting on some benches in a corner of the grass-covered area by the school.
"Are you guys okay?" I asked as I ran up to them.
"Yeah," Chloe said. "But my mom's still freaked out. She didn't believe me when I said I was unconscious because of chloroform instead of smoke inhalation."
"To be fair, what happened to us was pretty weird," I said. "I mean, what was some random British lady doing here pretending to be one of Mike and Ben's teachers named Professor Hale?"
"Wasn't there like a famous historical guy from like the American revolution named Hale?" Chloe asked.
"Maybe," I said. "I don't really remember. It's probably just a coincidence."
Kate, who had been looking down at her phone, suddenly exclaimed, "I knew it!"
"Knew what?" Chloe asked.
"Remember when Ben and Mike got accused of doing all that crazy stuff in Europe?" Kate asked.
"Yes," I said.
"Well, that woman from yesterday, and that girl too, they were accused with Ben and Mike and all those other people."
"Can I see that?" I asked.
Kate nodded and handed me her phone.
"You're right," I said. "But how is this connected? Didn't all those government agencies come out and say it had all been a very complicated case of mistaken identity?"
"That might just be what they want us to think," Chloe said. "Clearly something big is going on here. I mean, Ben's smart, and so is Mike. And if that woman and that girl can just make and use explosives whenever they feel like it, they're probably pretty smart too."
"So?" I asked.
"It makes sense to have a whole bunch of smart people at some dorky science school, but there could be a different reason Ben and Mike go to that school."
"What are you suggesting?" I asked.
"Well, I don't have all the details worked out yet, but I'd assume the government must be involved," Chloe said.
"Whose government?" Kate asked.
"Ours," Chloe said. "What other government would be involved?"
"Maybe Britain's," Kate said. "Otherwise, why would that British lady be involved?"
"But they were accused of destroying that museum by the British government," I said. "It doesn't make any sense for them to be somehow involved with Britain's government and still be accused of crimes by Britain's government. That woman's probably just married to an American or something. I mean, I'm assuming that girl is her daughter, and that girl sounded American."
"It doesn't really matter if Britain is also involved or not," Chloe said. "What matters is that two boys from our school have gotten all caught up in this mysterious thing, and then keep coming back at random times and then immediately disappearing again."
"It must be training of some sort," Kate said. "Because before this, Ben never would have been able to even come close to beating up Dirk and his friends."
"Yes, but what kind of training?" I asked.
"Maybe something sciency," Chloe said. "That is what this school is supposed to be for, after all."
